Here's my first cut at a new design for the homepage.  I'm not sure if the HTML will fit into a "welcome message" (ie, the part that is editable on the What's New page) - the HTML weighs in at 11 Kb so it might be too long.  I'll have a look at Roger's effort in a moment (thanks, mate).
