I. REQUIREMENTS:
Applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:
AGE:
Must be at least 21 years of age.
EDUCATION:
Must possess either a High School Diploma or General Educational Development (GED) certificate.
CHARACTER:
No one may apply who has been convicted of a felony, a crime of moral turpitude, or has been dishonorably discharged from the Armed Forces of the United States. Any applicant who falsifies an application shall be rejected from further consideration.
MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS:
The City of Tulsa Physician and the Oklahoma Pension and Retirement System shall make final determination of an applicant’s medical acceptance.
VISION:
Corrected vision must be no less than 20/30 in both eyes and visual acuity without correction must be no less than 20/100. Must be able to distinguish red, green, and yellow.
HEARING:
Hearing must be normal in both ears, no hearing aid devices are allowed.

III. SELECTION PROCESS

- Physical Ability Test (Pass/Fail)
- Conditional Offer of Employment
- Psychological Assessment and Interview
- Medical Examination by City Physician including a drug screening
- Acceptance into Oklahoma Firefighter Pension System
- Final Offer of Employment
Final Selections are made by the Tulsa Fire Department and appointment to the Fire Academy is authorized by the Mayor. Applicants who are appointed are hired as Probationary Firefighters and must successfully complete a four (4) month Academy at the Fire Training Center, plus eight (8) months on the job training at station houses.
IV. SALARY AND BENEFITS: As of July 1, 2000, the following salary and benefits are in effect. The salary during the first 6 months of the probationary period is $1952.32/month. Upon satisfactory completion of the first six (6) months of the probationary period, the salary is increased to $2440.40/month. Once assigned to a fire company, work hours are 24 hours on-duty/48 hours off-duty.
LONGEVITY PAY:
Longevity pay shall begin after completion of three (3) years of service at the rate of $21.60 per month and increases by $7.20 per month each year to a maximum of $144.00 per month at twenty years of service.
RETIREMENT:
Retirement at one-half pay after twenty years, and three-quarters pay after thirty years.
SICK LEAVE:
Upon completion of probationary period, paid sick leave accrues at the rate of twelve hours for 24 hour shift employees or 9.23 hours for 8-hour shift employees for each full month worked.
HEALTH INSURANCE:
The City pays full individual health insurance. The City also pays part of dependent coverage.
DENTAL INSURANCE:
The City pays full individual health insurance. The City does not pay dependent dental coverage.
LIFE INSURANCE:
Paid in full by the City.
UNIFORM ALLOWANCE:
$500 for the first year; $455 for the second year; $395 per year thereafter.
EDUCATIONAL INCENTIVE PAY:
Educational incentive pay is available to those who qualify with post-secondary coursework at an appropriately accredited college or university. Educational incentive pay ranges from $50 (associate degree) to $100 (bachelor's degree) per month.
PROMOTIONAL OPPORTUNITIES:
After three years of continued service, Firefighters are eligible for promotional examinations for the position of Fire Equipment Operator (Driver).
