Great Dane Room Ethics Creed:

Great Dane Owners Shall Provide Proper Care to All Danes in Their Care, Including:

  • Proper Shelter - Great Danes should be housed indoors at night and preferably during the day. Great Danes should not be left outdoors for extended periods, but if they are then they must have access to shelter from the sun, rain, snow, etc.
  • Food - Of a quality condusive to raising a healthy Great Dane; puppies who are fed commercial dry dog food should be fed between 21-24% protein and 12-15% fat, unless a veterinarian prescribes other due to a specific medical condition.
  • Water - Danes shall have access to proper amounts of clean, fresh water daily.
  • Medical Care - Danes should be seen by a veterinarian regularly, and kept free of parasites including but not limited to intestinal worms, fleas, ticks, and heartworms.
  • Obedience Training - Is a must for well-adjusted Danes.
  • Proper Attention - Great Danes are a family-oriented breed, and we believe they should be treated as part of the family.

Great Dane Breeders Shall:

  • Breed only Great Danes of sound temperament and structure.
  • Have all breeding danes evaluated for breed standard conformation by independent judges, mentors, and evaluators (i.e. through dog shows), and only breed danes which closely conform to the breed standard.
  • Be informed about genetics and work to eliminate genetic defects in the breed.
  • Refrain from using a Great Dane for breeding if they have produced offspring with serious inherited defects on more than one occasion.
  • Never sell to any pet shops or pet brokers.
  • Not allow puppies to leave the litter permanently prior to at least 7-8 weeks of age.
  • Breed only Great Danes which are registered by credible kennel clubs - AKC and UKC in the United States, CKC (Canadian Kennel Club) in Canada, KC in Britain, and equivalent kennel clubs in other countries. Breeders shall only participate in breedings that would result in puppies being registerable in above kennel clubs - i.e. Danes on limited registration shall not be bred.
  • Sell only dogs and puppies in good physical and temperamental condition at the time of the sale. All puppies and dogs shall be free of intestinal parasites at the time the buyer takes possession. Breeders shall provide all buyers with a record of immunizations and veterinary care, as well as instructions for feeding, ear taping, etc.
  • Sell non-show pets on limited registration, where available, with spay/neuter requirements in the contract.
  • Screen all breeding dogs for hereditary health conditions such as hip dysplasia, eye defects, thyroid disease, heart diseases, etc, and repeat tests as needed for those which may appear later in life, and only breed those animals which pass the applicable certification. Puppy buyers shall be provided with copies of these test results on the puppies' parents, and breeders shall make every effort possible to inform previous puppy buyers of potential genetic conditions which are known to the line at the time of the sale or which become known subsequent to the sale.
  • Screen puppy buyers in an attempt to make sure that the home the puppy is going into is the puppy's final home. Breeders shall include in their contract the provision that should the buyer need to re-home the dog in the future for any reason, breeder will take the puppy back and find it an appropriate home at a later time.
  • All health guarantees or lack of health guarantee shall be in writing.
  • Never use a stud dog other than that agreed upon by the owner of the bitch.
  • Never breed a Great Dane younger than 18 months of age; greater than 2 years is preferred because many inheritable genetic defects are not positively identifiable until after 2 years of age.
  • Breed only Great Danes that have been examined by a veterinarian and certified to be free of sexually transmitted diseases.
