Crystals and their Magic

Any magic, in my opinion, is simply a matter of finding a tool or method which helps one tap the power deep within oneself. I have found that, since childhood, two forces have drawn me, and now help me attune myself to the harmonies and energies of the earth: candles and crystals. While i often use them in combination, I thought I would share at least the crystal part of my magic, and hope you all will, in return, share how you use these incredible creations of nature

What is a Crystal?

 For the purposes of this short course, we will define a crystal as a member of the stones and mineral family. Crystals are orderly and symmetrical creations of nature which radiate energy in an orderly pattern. That is why we are drawn to them, for stability, calmness and serenity, since we ourselves lack that symmetry and orderliness. There are hundreds of types of stones and realms full of information about which particular kind is appropriate for which healing, meditation, spell or whatever. In reading all of these incredibly long and occasionally conflicting lists, I learned that it was going to take some study to keep them all straight and fully utilize them. I will provide a reference below to some lists of the stones and their attributes. One of the most popular crystals is the quartz, made of silicon and oxygen, combined to form silicon dioxide. All societies have treasured this crystal for its clarity, and this is commonly the type of stone used for scrying or crystal balls. Many claims to its powers have been made throughout the years: enhances the body and the spirit, aids in glandular function, evens and balances the emotions, increases brain function, amplifies thought formation and dispels negativity, to name a few.The most common quartz is clear, sometimes called the mirror of the soul, but many other colors can be found, such as the smoky quartz, a grounding stone which helps an individual establish a gentle and loving connection with the body; the rose quartz, a stone for self love and acceptance.

How Crystals Work

The lore about crystals could fill pages and pages. Even if a skeptic doesn’t believe anything else about the stones, there is one truth about them that can never be denied: they are beautiful. Even simply experiencing their beauty is, in itself, a positive experience. Imagine such beauty given to us by nature! For those of us who can go further, crystals are a dense element with a high vibration. Despite having the tendency to be heavy , they can in fact impart a feeling of lightness. When we find the ability to become in tune with them, consciously or subconsciously, they can help lift depression by inspiring us to raise our own vibration level.

 Choosing a Crystal

 Crystals and gemstones each have their own individual signature or vibration, just as we do. And just as we humans “fall in love” with another, so we may find a perfect attachment with one of these manifestations of nature. There are many ways to “choose” a crystal, from

1) meditating for a few minutes, opening your eyes, and picking up the first stone to which your eye is drawn;

2) touching various stones, opening your intuition to sense for the vibrations, letting your eyes go “soft” and allow the crystal to call you;

3) paying attention to your environment, because a crystal in reality “chooses” you when you may not even be looking for a stone!

4) when mail order is the alternative for crystal buying, spend some moments meditating when filling out the order form, or before speaking to a salesperson, to allow the parts of your own energy to translate to the one who will choose your stone.

Clearing your Crystals

It is said that crystals can easily attract different kinds of vibrations, both positive and negative, and that the stone you choose may have been in contact with many other personalities and energies. Thus it is recommended that you use some type of cleansing method to restore your stone to a pure state. One suggestion I saw is to hold the stone and repeat a short phrase, such as “I will that this stone be self cleansing” Another method requires immersing the stone in salt water for several hours. Or holding the stone under running water, then drying it with a soft towel. Whichever method suits you, I have found that my own crystals seem brighter and more vibrant after being laid in the rays of the sun for about 20 minutes or so after a quick cleaning with mild jewelry cleaner/ In addition, although I have never seen this in print, my own stones have been wrapped or somehow joined with gold, as gold is a power metal for me. I suspect that those of us who bond with silver might find the moonlight a better resource?

Crystal Healing

 The safest way to use stones for healing, then, is in the manner of the
ancient Druids: go by the COLOR of the stone and apply the same principles
used in Color Healing.

For example, you know that yellow is good for intestinal and bowel disorders
and menstntal problems. For these problems, then, wear a yellow stone such
as yellow diamond, jasper, topaz, beryl, quartz, amber, etc. The stone should
be placed on the afflicted area for at least an hour each day and should be
worn, in the form of a pendant or ring, for the rest of the day, continuing until
the cure is affected.

Any good book on gems and minerals will give you full descriptions of the
many varieties of stones available in the full spectrum of color. Rubies,
emeralds, sapphires are obvious examples of red, green and blue, but there
are many other equally effective yet far less expensive stones available.
Here are a few stones, together with the colors in which they can be obtained
plus some of the ancient beliefs regarding their properties.

AMETHYST:... Stone of Venus. HERKIMER:... Balancing special variety of quartz crystal. "Diamond" works with yin/yang energies, known as the "Dream Crystal", aids in bringing teachings of the dream state into conscious awareness, very highly attuned spiritually.

JADE:... A most sacred stone and a symbol of divine revelation. Brings good fortune and health to its owner. Stimulates practicality, wisdom, and universal attunement. Thought to provide a link between the spiritual and the mundane. Most revered by the Chinese. Creamy green stone.

JASPER (all):... Safeguard personal independence, said to bring inspirational warnings when there is danger of unfair domination from others. balance emotions and stress. Aid and comfort during periods of female distress. One stone worn about the neck and another around the waist.

KYANITE:... One of the two minerals in the mineral kingdom which never needs cleaning or clearing, as it doesn't accumulate or retain negative energy vibrations. This mineral's energy is unlimited in its applications, thus making it one of the best stones for doing attunements. It aligns the chakras automatically and immediately, with no conscious direction. It can also be used to 'open the chakras', under the direction of the user, and can also, consciously, direct the energy to align the emotional, intellectual, physical, ethereal, and astral bodies. It brings tranquility and a calming effect to the whole being, stimulates communication and psychic awareness on all levels, dispels anger and frustration, further advances the conscious connection between higher levels of intuition and heart-felt love, and dispels confusion arising from emotional, spiritual and intellectual problems. This stone supposedly has equal amounts of negative and positive forces, thereby adding to the balance of physical and spiritual life. Used to release repressed emotions and for physical detoxing. Brilliant shades of green, very apparent in bands of shades.

MOONSTONE:... Aid in bringing forth memories of past lives, carried as a good luck piece. Brings good fortune. Reflects the wearers being and feelings. Promotes unselfishness. Opens the heart to humanitarian love and hope. Good for protection while traveling on water. Gives clarity to spiritual understanding. Good for pre-menstrual symptoms and balancing to the reproductive system. Used to ease childbirth. Sometimes called the Queen of the Heavens stone. Calming effect on emotions. Eases menstrual pain, alleviates many degenerative conditions in the skin, hair, eyes, and body fluids (tears, digestive juices). Translucent milky stone with color tints ranging from white-yellow to blue-gray.

MOSS AGATE:... Assists in making and keeping friends, helpful to farmers and those interested in growing plants. Moss Agates considered to be most powerful. Aid in restoration of energy, used in healing, and believed to bring wearer happiness, wealth, health, and long life. Increases ability to ward off self-induced anger and inner bitterness. Moss green-balances emotional energy. Moss red-balances physical energy. Blue lace-gives tranquillity. Translucent stone with flecks of green.

OBSIDIAN:... Black- Used to sharpen both the internal and external.

ONYX:... Preserves against the bites of snakes and venomous insects, and assists in bringing marital happiness. When certain persons wear it, may bring on terrible shapes to a dreamer, from which the future can be devined. Will ground spiritual energy to physical plane. Deep black color.

OPAL:... An unlucky stone which can interfere with love and marriage unless one was born between September 23rd and November 21. To these people it will give second sight, or clairvoyance, and prevent contagion from the air. Generally white but various color range depending of variety. Identified by brilliant sparkling effect.

PEARLS:... Worn as a necklace, make the wearer chaste. Stimulates feminine qualities, used to focus attention, helps pull together mental and spiritual forces, peace of mind. Represents purity, modesty, & gentleness. A very lucky stone for those born in June.

PERIDOT:... Dispels fears, guilt, and depression. Used to counteract negative emotions and healing of the spirit. Once worn as a means of gaining foresight and divine inspiration. Protection, prosperity, emotional calming, purifies, balances. Light green clear stone.

PYRITE:... Enhances mental capacity and attracts money to owner. Has protecting, shielding aspect for physical, mental, emotional levels. Shields from negative energy, strengthens circulatory system, clears oxygen in the blood. Also known as fool’s gold.

QUARTZ:... Amplifies healing energy. Used to help draw out pain. Able to tap into energies of the universe. Good stone for meditating on. Very potent and often worn to protect from negative vibrations. Cleanse regularly. Rudilated-rutile needles help focus attention.

RHODOCHROSITE:... Adds courage, will, passion to the loving heart vibration. Represents love of God. Milky pink stone with definition.

RHODONITE:... Used to activate love. Attracts or keeps a loving partner. Pink stone with black highlights -very defined.

ROSE QUARTZ:... Worn or carried for love, fidelity, peace, and happy marriage. Aids intuition and emotional balance. Reduces stress and tension - cools hot tempers. Vibrations of universal love & inner serenity. Comforts heart from all wounds, helps heal emotional pain, enhances love , self-love, positive outlook, joy and oneness. Light to medium milky pink color.

RUBY:... The stone of freedom, charity, dignity and divine power. Increases vigor, renews vitality and cleanses the blood. The stone of courage. Helps banish grief for those in mourning. Generally deep red with orange or pink undertone.

SMOKY QUARTZ:... Good for calming the mind. Eases depression, fear and panic.

SNOWFLAKE OBSIDIAN:... Teaches one the truth of oneself in relation to ones ego, depicts the contrasts of life-day and night, darkness and light, truth and error. Grounds spiritual energy to physical plane. Absorbs negativity. Black stone with lacy highlights of white.

SODALITE:... Alleviates fears, Clears the mind. Blue with flecks.

TIGER EYE:... Calms emotions, protects against external stresses. To restore physical energy & quiet emotional nature.

TOPAZ:... Will make melancholy vanish when worn or carried in the left hand. Calms emotions, protects against external stresses. To restore physical energy & quiet emotional nature. Protects against insomnia and depression, mood elevator, revitalizes, stimulates creative thinking processes, eases death. Clear gold stone (deeper color than amber).

TOURMALINE:... Supercharged with magnetic and electric energy. Lifts fears and negative conditions. Causes the wearer to be flexible, understanding and more objective in purpose and reason. Electric and magnetic properties. Works as protective shield, consumes negative energy without releasing into atmosphere, has to do with visions and "seeing" with compassion,, teaches to expand limited concepts of thinking, relates to aspirations for higher love, very complete stone. TURQUOISE:... Helps ward off danger and clears one’s path of pitfalls. Protector against evil. Self-love stone. Primary holy stone of Native Americans. Vibrates calming radiations, protective, and restores healthy mental attitude. Stone of friendship. Balancing and healing. Great strength and vitality. Takes on characteristics of the wearer. It is unwise to wear a turquoise formerly worn by one who has died. excellent for both Spiritual attunement and healing of the energy centers and the physical body, valuable for grounding as well as for vision quests and astral travel , purifies all levels of being and is capable of handling strong negativity, also used for wounds and for damage to bones. Shades of blue, ranging from deep sky blue to greenish Chinese turquoise.
