The S.S. Universe Explorer arrived along side at the Port of New Orleans at 9:45am central time. As of 2:30pm disembarkation is underway. Because of the slightly delayed arrival it will take until late this afternoon for all students to disembark. Families might not hear from their students until late in the day.
The staff at the Institute for Shipboard Education would like to wish all family and friends of the fall 2000 voyagers a happy holiday season. We hope that you enjoy the homecoming!

As of 2:00 pm EST we have received confirmation that all Semester at Sea participants are accounted for and the vessel will depart on October 17 at 5:30 am local time from Ho Chi Minh City for Penang, Malaysia. All shipboard repairs have been completed, inspected and approved for sailing. Arrival in Penang is expected to remain as scheduled.
We continue to monitor worldwide political events and will post any updates, if and when they occur, on this website.
October 13, 2000
AS of 0920 EST, ISE has received confirmation that the damage that occurred to the S.S. Universe Explorer on October 12 will not compromise the vessel's future stability or safety. A repair team will commence work on the morning of October 14 that is expected to be completed by October 17. A surveyor from the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS, the vessel's classification society) will arrive at the ship on October 14 to monitor and approve the repair work prior to the ship's scheduled departure. An underwater video survey, which will be witnessed by the ABS surveyor, will also be performed to confirm the integrity of the vessel's underwater hull and running gear, including props, shafts, struts and rudder. Delays in departure, in any, are expected to be minimal.

As always, ISE continually monitors worldwide events to ensure that the safety of Semester at Sea participants will not be compromised. We are consistently in contact with the US State Department and Pinkerton Global Intelligence Services. Events in the past have caused us to alter the course of our itinerary and, should the need arise during the current voyage, we will once again act accordingly.
October 12, 2000
We have received confirmation that the S.S. Universe Explorer has arrived in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. It was further reported that while traveling along the Saigon River to the port this morning, the Universe Explorer was "sideswiped" by another vessel. The Deans and Captain of the vessel have emphasized that no one was injured as a result of the incident and all participants are proceeding with their field activities as planned. While there is damage to the starboard side of the ship, it is currently being inspected by engineers and ship's management and is considered repairable with minimal or no impact on the ship's schedule.
