What are Hash House Harriers?

According to Webster:

    * hash house (slang), n., a cheap restaurant.

    * harrier, n., 1. any of an English breed of dog used for hunting rabbits. 2. A cross-country runner.

What's Hashing?

So you're interested in hashing.  Maybe it's because you've seen strange flour markings on roads and trails in the Savannah area (arrows, circles, and such), or you've noticed a group of people on Sunday afternoons senselessly running around blowing whistles and shouting “On-On!”  Or possibly, it's because a hasher's silver tongue convinced you to consider the sport.  In any event, welcome to the Savannah Hash House Harriers website.

Variously described as "the lunatic fringe of running" and "the drinking club with a running problem," the Hash House Harriers are a worldwide group with some 350 chapters in the United States and 1700 chapters worldwide.  Our premise is simple, the “hare” lays a trail of flour and chalk over a course (s)he chooses. The other harriers (the hounds) try to follow that trail to the end where we enjoy munchies and beer (or soft drinks for those disinclined to imbibe).  The typical hash is a varied as the Hare, some 2 miles, some 3-5 miles over hill and dale, through suburbs, woods, malls, et al. The hash isn't a race - no prizes to the swift.  Following the trail is the challenge, camaraderie and beverages are the rewards.

Adults from all backgrounds and of every ability level make up the Savannah H3.  We hash every Sunday at 3:00 pm'ish. Check the dErections Next Hash page or the Message Board for details and the starting location of the next hash.  If you're serious about trying hashing come on out and join the fun!  See you at the hash!
