Gary Mullins - Feb 3, 2008 View | Viewers Y-DNA TEST RESULTS FROM DESCENDANT OF MARSHALL MULLINS SHOWS THIS LINE IS OUT OF THE BOOKER MULLINS SET Test results from a new member of the Mullins Y-DNA Project who descends from Marshall Mullins who married Ollie Blaylock have proven that this line descends from old Booker Mullins (and not from the Chunky Bill Mullins set as was previously thought). If Chunky Bill Mullins (as was believed) was a son of John Chunky Mullins, who (it was believed, and DNA testing has so far confirmed) a son of William Mullins JR (brother to Rev. War John and Ambrose Mullins SR), then Marshall could either 1) not possibly be a son of Chunky Bill (because his DNA clearly shows the tested descendant to be a direct match with the Booker Mullins descendants who have been tested) or 2) both Chunky Bill and son Marshall are direct descendants of old Booker Mullins, or 3) our tested descendant of Marshall is actually not a direct descendant of Marshall. On the surface, there is some evidence to leaning toward 2) as the correct descent—since we have Chunky Bill’s first wife (Temperance Blalock) living with Marshall and his family in the 1850 Wyoming Census (just a few doors down from Chunky Bill and his second wife and their family). However, it is possible that the reason that Temperance Blalock is living with the family of Marshall Mullins is because there is a family connection between Temperance and Marshall’s wife—Ollie Blalock. Possibility # 4) may be the best fit--that Marshall Mullins is actually a son of Cuddy Bill Mullins (son of old Booker) as outlined in more detail below. Here are the records referred to: WILLIAM MULLINS, KNOWN AS CHUNKY BILL was born circa 1790 in Burke County, North Carolina. He married (1) TEMPERANCE BLAYLOCK, KNOWN AS TEMPY (a daughter of John Blaylock). Evidently, he and Temperance parted company (she is living in the household of Marshall Mullins, born circa 1826 in the 1850 Wyoming Co., VA Census—just four households away from her (former) husband William and his second wife Sarah. William Mullins (age 54—b. ca. 1796) and Sarah Stanley, age 46 (born in VA) are listed in the 1850 Wyoming Co., VA Census (household # 162) along with the following: Lucida Stanley, age 12, born in KY; Nancy Stanley, age 10, born in KY; Dicy Stanley, age 7, born in KY; and John Stanley, age 5, born in VA. William married (2) SARAH STANLEY on February 16, 1852 in Pike County, Kentucky. William and second wife Sarah are listed in the 1860 Wyoming Co., VA Census: William Mullins, age 70 (b. ca. 1790) in NC; Sarah, age 58, b. NC; Nancy, age 22, b. in KY; Dicy, age 17, b. KY; John, age 13, b. in VA. Because of this (one) test result, I am torn between tentatively placing Marshall as a son of William Mullins (a son of old Booker Mullins who was known as Cuddy Bill, or Lame Hand) and wife Elizabeth Roberts, or leaving him as a son of Chunky Bill Mullins. I am certainly open to other opinions and would appreciate any information pro or con that would help in correctly placing this family and their descendants in relation to the other Mullins families and lines of descent. The placement of Marshall as a son of William and Elizabeth (Roberts) Mullins is primarily the result of a single 2008 Y-DNA test result that matches one direct male descendant of Marshall that was tested, to the Y-DNA of a number of men who collectively descend from Booker Mullins SR. While this descendant without a doubt believes he descends from Marshall Mullins, the Y-DNA evidence tells us that if this is so, then Marshall must descend from Booker Mullins SR. It is possible that Marshall could be a son of either William (Cuddy Bill) or Joshua who married Polly Johnson, or John who married Mary Hamilton – all sons of old Booker Mullins SR. However, out of these three sons of old Booker, only the children of William (Cuddy Bill) Mullins move into the West Virginia Co. of Wyoming. Since I don’t believe it is possible that William (Chunky Bill) could possibly be a son of old Booker Mullins, I have (at this point in time) now placed Marshall as a probable son of William and Elizabeth (Roberts) Mullins. As noted above, previously, several family historians (myself included) had placed Marshall as a son of William Mullins, known as Chunky Bill, who married Sarah and is found in records later in life in Wyoming Co., WVA in close proximity to both Marshall and (his brother) Samuel Mullins. After reviewing both the existing records and the Y-DNA evidence, the only other possible conclusion outside of that stated above, would be that Chunky Bill Mullins was a son of old Booker Mullins, and it would be highly unlikely that two sons would both be named William. Y-DNA testing of other male descendants of William Henry Harrison Mullins (known as Cuddy Bill) as well as any male descendants of Chunky Bill might shed additional light on the correct placement of this Marshall Mullins. The problem with accurately placing this family within the descendant families of old Booker Mullins is that the Marshall Mullins line lived near, and were associated with the Chunky Bill Mullins line who were (genetically speaking) a completely different bunch. Originally, I had identified Marshall as a son of Chunky Bill along with the following: i. JOHN S. MULLINS (born circa 1810 in Burke County, North Carolina, and died circa 1890 in West Virginia). He married OLLIE SHORT (a daughter of Benjamin and Elizabeth (Stanley) Short). Benjamin Short, being a son of William Short and Elisabeth (Bolling) Short, and Elizabeth Stanley, being a daughter of Joseph Stanley (b. ca. 1755) and his second wife Sarah Kitchen). John S. and Ollie were married on September 01, 1830 in Pike County, Kentucky. I have included John S. Mullins as a probable son of William and Tempy, based on the research of Cornelius Carroll, as well as the 1850 Census of Wyoming County, VA (now WVA), which has an entry (household # 163) for the household of Benjamin Short, age 58, wife, Elizabeth (Stanley) Short, age 50, John S. Mullins, age 40, wife Ollie (Short) Mullins, age 38, their son John Mullins, age 14, an Alie Mullins, age 13, an Ollie Mullins, age 10, an Elizabeth Mullins, age 5, a William Mullins, age 1, and a William Stanley, age 65 (thought to be the father of William Mullins's second wife, Sarah). ii. SAMUEL MULLINS was born circa 1815 in Kentucky and married (unknown). He is listed in the 1850 Wyoming Co., VA (now WV) Census (household # 157) with no wife and two children, and living next door to Marshall Mullins (b. ca. 1826—this is the Marshall Mullins whose direct male descendant had his DNA tested and matches exactly with the Booker Mullins set). Since Samuel is living right next door to Marshall Mullins in 1850 and names a son Marshall, I believe it is probable that Samuel and Marshall are brothers—and if so, then Samuel too may be a son of Cuddy Bill Mullins instead of Chunky Bill. Samuel Mullins doesn’t appear in the Wyoming Co. 1860 Census, and has not been located after 1850. He had at least two children: a. Marshall Mullins, born circa 1839 b. Elizabeth Mullins, born circa 1844 iii. REBECCA MULLINS was born circa 1820. She married JAMES ROBERTS JR on May 10, 1838, in Pike County, Kentucky. Rebecca and James moved to Wyoming Co., VA (now WVA) by 1850, and were in Greenbrier Co., WVA in 1870. James was a son of Cornelius Roberts. iv. SARAH MULLINS was born March 1826 in Kentucky. She married 1) ISAIAH WILCOX (born in Wilkes County, NC Feb. 20 1796, and died in 1879 on the banks of the little Sandy River in Carter Co., KY). Sarah married 2) to _____Wright. Sarah died after 1888, outliving her second husband who died on or about that year. Isaiah Wilcox/Wilcoxson who was first married to Fannie Greer and then...." to Sarah Mullins who was born March 1826 , and a daughter of one William Mullins, called, I believe, Chunky Bill. He was a descendant of a tribe immigrating to Virginia in an early day and their name and number, in and about the head of the Big Sandy River in Pike County, Kentucky, and Wise County, West Virginia, is like the sands of the sea. The mother of Sarah was a Miss Temperance Blaylock, a daughter of John Blaylock, of Dee River, North Carolina who was a soldier in the Revolutionary War of 1776. To Isaiah and Sarah "Sallie" were born the following children: Dulcenia, Louisa, Andrew Jackson, Hiram, Caroline, Thomas Jefferson, Isaiah, and Catherine as well as one or two pairs of twins that died in infancy. The above named offspring all reside in Carter County near Willard. Caroline died some years ago. The boys are all good clean men and useful. I wish them well, also 'Sallie' their aged mother who has often divided rations with me. She was a woman possessed of much courage, tall, rather dark complected, black hair, black eyes, stammered a little in speech and when riled would say, 'There's nary a devil if I don't learn you on which side your bread is buttered !!' and twas only a word or a blow with her. Her and grandfather lived agreeable. She was very kind and devoted to him all of his life. Her nature was to be kind, yet she lacked nothing in temper but could control it admirably." "Sallie, after Grandfather died, remarried a man named Wright, residing on the waters of the fork of the Little Sandy River, near Willard, Carter County, Kentucky. Wright died on or about 1888, and Sallie went to live with her son-in-law, a Mr. Bryant, residing at Willard, Kentucky. She lives there yet, I presume." (above is from the Journal of Francis Marion "Uncle Marion" Wilcox, written in 1897, and in private hands) v. MARSHALL MULLINS was born circa 1826 in Virginia and died in West Virginia. He married Ollie Blalock (born circa 1825 in KY). Marshall is found in the 1860 Wyoming Co., VA Census as follows: Marshall Mullins, age 32; Olly, age 34; Squire, age 18; Lewis, age 16; Preston, age 14; Harvey, age 12; Louisa, age 10; David C., age 6; Causby (female) age 4; Elizabeth, age 1. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Jackie Sampson - Feb 18, 2008 Edit | Delete | Viewers | Reply to this item gary can i post this on my mullins site? will copy past it so will be in your words. jackie ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Gary Mullins - Feb 20, 2008 Viewers | Reply to this item Jackie, I would be agreeable to that--with one request: That you put out a plea on your site for any direct male descendants of these lines of Mullins to think about getting their Y-DNA tested (that is probably the only way we are going to figure this one out!) They can contact me directly at revel55@msn.com ....Gary
