IN MEMORY OF
MICK ORSICH

FEBRUARY 20, 1945 -
SEPTEMBER 21, 2004

Mick Orsich, a long time race fan, got his start in racing back in the 60’s as a scorer at Hummingbird Speedway. He was involved with other racing facilities during the years Hummingbird did not operate, and took over the managing duties of Hummingbird upon its reopening in 2000. He was the track’s flagman during part of the 2003 & all of the 2004 season.

Mick was diagnosed with esophageal cancer in 2003, and vowed to fight the disease to the very end. After surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy treatments, he went back to work as a foreman at Brockway Mould in a mere five weeks. Early in the 2004 season, drivers at the speedway presented Mick with a plaque for his dedicated service while battling his illness. Mick lost his battle with the disease on September 21, 2004 as he succumbed just three days after the racing season ended at the speedway.

Even though it was a tremendous loss to the speedway family, we must move on without Mick. But we do so remembering not only the man, but also the many things he taught us. Everyone at Hummingbird Speedway is proud to have been associated with Mick. He was a great fan of racing, a dedicated employee, and - most importantly - a good friend.

           9-11-01

  God Bless America...
The Land of the Free
and The Home of the Brave
!

It goes without saying that we (as do all Americans) grieve for those lost in the terrible, tragic events of 9-11-01. Let us go forward in honor and pay tribute to those who were victims of such senseless acts by defeating the terrorists in their war against all of humanity. At this time we should be united and strong, remembering what this great country of ours stands for.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the friends and family of Joe Ellis, who was killed Tuesday September 11, 2001 in an auto accident.

If you wish to leave a message for Joe's friends and family, you may do so via the GuestBook at the "Oxymoron Racing" website (http://www.oxymoronracing.homestead.com/oxymoronracing.html).

From 2001 to 2004, a night was dedicated to the memory of Joe and the sport he loved so much. For more information on the annual Joe Ellis Memorial, click one of the links below:

Hummingbird Speedway offers our sincere sympathy to the
family and many friends of Richard "Dick" Rankin, who was
killed in a construction accident on Wednesday August 13, 2003.

In the late 1960's or early 70's I enjoyed many nights at Hummingbird Speedway watching Dick Rankin compete. Although I never personally knew him (unless - since I was just a youngster then - you count asking him for an autograph, which he gladly signed on the back of a picture of him I had, and still do to this day). But on Saturday August 2, 2003 I got the opportunity to finally meet Mr. Rankin. This time he was at Hummingbird, not with a car to drive but - rather - one he was trying to sell. During our brief conversation, I could tell everything I had heard was correct; that it was true... the comments many others had made about what a true gentleman and genuinely nice person he was.

Dave

Here's Dick back from his "old" Bird Days...

And here he is checking out the track prep
on August 2, 2003...

Now instead of being on the track or watching through the fence he'll be looking down from above. RIP.

May it help the family to know that many share their sorrow and mourn the loss of such a wonderful man. For more information, you may wish to read this article that Tri City Speedway has on their website. It was published in several area newspapers - ironically - less than a week before his tragic death.
