Peachy and the Cat

by Natalie Ranae

Peachy is a peach colored dwarf hamster. He has many brothers and sisters so lives in a big pot all by himself with shavings, a little plastic shoe to hide in, and his food bowl.

One day Peachy was sleeping in his nest, all buried when he heard a noise outside his cage. Stirring around in his nest, he poked his head out to see who it was. It was the Cat! Someone must have left the door open to the room and the cat had come in!. Cat stuck her big black head in the metal pan and sniffed loudly. Peachy was curious. He wasn't sure what this big cat was doing sticking her head in his pan but he didn't like being woken up. Maybe Cat had a treat for him, he better get up and see.

Peachy got out of his nest and scrambled up to the side of the pan and looked around. Cat stuck her head in further and sniffed at him, then OH NO!! Peachy felt himself being lifted up , up.....!!!

"Put me down!!!!!!!!" Peachy squeaked, but mommy was nowhere near to rescue Peachy.

Soon Peachy was plopped on the fuzzy carpet outside his cage. Quick as he could, Peachy started running, scurrying. He didn't know where he was going or what he was doing. He was just getting away from the Cat.

He ran toward the green book shelf, "...Too small. I can't go under there", Peachy thought.

Around the side of the shelf Peachy went, among a bunch of papers. Peachy crouched looking under the shelf at the cat on the other side of the shelf. She was starting at him. Peachy hid further behind the shelf and an old guitar.

Soon Peachy heard footsteps!

"What are you DOING Maggie?!!" Mommy said. "Where's Peachy?!?!??" Peachy heard mommy stir around in the pan to see if he was in his nest. OH NO!

NAUGHTY CAT! YOU NAUGHTY THING!" Mommy said, and shoved the cat out of the room.

Mommy started scurrying around with another human looking for Peachy.

Peachy was too scared to move. What if the cat was still out there?

A little bit later, Peachy saw someone look behind the shelf. Then mommy peered back at him with her sister.

Peachy started waddling toward the human faces. They put a little hamster box at the end of the shelf and Peachy climbed right in.

"Oh, Peachy. You poor thing!!" "That naughty cat let you loose and you got lost!!"

Peachy was very happy to be back in safety. He got lots of treats from the humans and even let mommy hold him instead of biting. He was happy. Soon he went to bed in his nest.

Now Mommy always keeps the door to the room closed so no cat can get in.
