| British Hamster Association Standards June 2002 Feature Eyes [Scroll down for Winners.] | We're starting with eyes because they're easy. The Standards are similar for both Syrians and Dwarves so they can be considered together for this month. The Eyes and Ears category accounts for 5 points of the possible 100 show points. | SYRIANS - The eyes shall be large, prominent and widely set. CAMPBELLS - Eyes should be set well apart and be rounded, but should not bulge. WINTER WHITES - The rounded eyes should be well placed, about midway up the face. The eyes are bead-like but should not bulge too much. CHINESE - The round eyes should be set well apart and should not bulge too much. | Mr. Nibbles was bred by Linda and is owned by Katelyn Merten. He's a male cream Syrian. His eyes are big, bright and nicely spaced. He would probably receive a 0.5 point reduction because they could be a little larger. | | Sunny is one of Linda's opal platinum males (Campbells Dwarf). His eyes are big and round. They could be appreciated a little better if his head was wider. | | | "Practically perfect in every way." (Reproduced with permission of Lorraine Hill.) | | That's it! Now go take some pictures of your favorite "best eyes" hamsters, and upload them to the BHA Standards Photo Gallery. No camera? Surf the web for photos of hamsters with great eyes, and submit a link on the BHA Standards Links List. In your post be sure to indicate which hamster you're entering on the linked page in case there is more than one. If multiple people submit the same link, credit will go to the first. (No links to hamsters at AAA Hamsters, The River Road Hamstery or the California Hamster Association.) Only two entries per member per month please. Questions? Post to the BHA Standards Message Board. Remember - enjoy your hamsters, and... |
| Have your Standards! | Linda and Jan | Judge's Page by Linda Price Remember that photos are never perfect. We only have the one view and might make another decision if we saw the animal in person. From the view we had, these are the results.
Syrians | Millicent is first. She has nice, round eyes that are proportioned to her head. They show well and are one of the key features you notice when you look at her. | | Snickers is the runner up. There was some concern with Snickers since her eyes may have a bit of a bulge to them which would hurt her score. This is one thing which is much easier to judge in person when you can turn the animal and get multiple angles. Nevertheless her eyes are very nice, and she is the runner up. | | Dwarves | Ivan is first. He again has nice, round eyes that are proportioned to his head. When looking at Ivan, the eyes stand out as a strong feature which blend well with his head.
| | Ginger is a close second. She has the same main strengths as Ivan does just to a slightly lesser degree. | | |
