MARCH 20 GLOBAL DAY OF ACTION

*How you can help
*Flyers in English, Spanish and Arabic
*Transportation information and over 200 local actions
& more!

The March 20 Global Day of Action is in just one week and
momentum is growing on a local, regional, national and
international scale. There are now demonstrations in over
45 countries, including in over 200 U.S. cities in 36
states, which local organizers have posted to the
A.N.S.W.E.R. website. For the regional action in New York,
buses, vans, car caravans and trains are bringing people
from as far south as Richmond, VA to as far north as
Burlington, VT. Currently there are over 20 cities
organizing transportation to New York City. For
information on transportation to New York City or how to
plug into one of the over 200 demonstrations being
organized across the U.S., see below for links.

March 20 will be a powerful manifestation of the people in
the United States who are demanding "Bring the Troops Home
Now" and "End Colonial Occupation from Iraq to Palestine
to Haiti and Everywhere." It will be the first massive
outpouring since the October 25, 2003, demonstrations when
100,000 people came into the streets of Washington DC.

There are many ways that you can help out in this last
week. Here are a few:

1) MAKE A FINANCIAL CONTRIBUTION

We urgently need your help - please make a financial
contribution to help us cover all of the vast expenses in
the last week. If you have made a contribution before, we
urge you to consider supporting this effort again. If you
have never contributed, now is the time. At a minimum, we
must raise $25,000 in the next few days towards meeting
the expenses of the demonstration.

Please make a TAX-DEDUCTIBLE contribution now online
through our secure server at
http://www.internationalanswer.org/donate.html, where you
can also get information on how to write a check.

2) HELP SPREAD THE WORD

The "downloads" page on the A.N.S.W.E.R. website now
features new versions of flyers in English, Arabic and
Spanish for New York City, San Francisco, Sacramento
(buses to San Francisco), Los Angeles, Chicago, Washington
DC (buses to DC), Boston (buses to DC) and Philadelphia.
It also includes stickers for New York City, Washington DC
and Boston.

PDF and JPEG versions of these materials can be found at:
http://www.internationalanswer.org/campaigns/resources/index.html

3) GET ON THE BUS TO NYC OR OTHER REGIONAL DEMONSTRATIONS,
OR JOIN A DEMONSTRATION IN YOUR CITY

For information about TRANSPORTATION TO NEW YORK CITY, and
about LOCAL & REGIONAL DEMONSTRATIONS taking place across
the U.S., go to
http://www.internationalanswer.org/campaigns/m20/m20transp.html

If you are ORGANIZING TRANSPORTATION to a regional event,

4) TAKE ACTION TO DEFEND FREE SPEECH RIGHTS ON MARCH 20

The A.N.S.W.E.R. Coalition issued an important message on
"The Battle for Free Speech on March 20." Please read that
message and take action through our easy-to-use system
that allows you to send a customized message to the New
York City Mayor and City Council.

Help Us Sound the Alarm Before January 22!

Contribute  to our ad campaign

Tell a friend about this attack on endangered animals

Dear Friend,

Do you believe the best way to save endangered animals is to kill them?

Of course not. Yet that’s the logic behind the Interior Department’s plan to gut America’s 30-year-old Endangered Species Act, which has protected animals worldwide with bipartisan support under the last six US Presidents.

IFAW first exposed this scheme in November. And thanks to a flood of email messages from people like you the Bush administration is starting to feel the heat.

But now our opponents are fighting back. That’s why I’m appealing for your help again. We must spread the word about this unprecedented threat to endangered species.

Please tell ALL your friends and family to send an email to the Bush administration by visiting www.ifaw.org/saveESA.

… and if you possibly can, please contribute today  to help me run this hard hitting campaign ad in major newspapers and online. We need to generate a flood of protest messages in the next few weeks and that’s going to cost money. I know times are tight, but if we all contribute a few dollars I know we can raise enough to make a difference.

Here’s what’s happening:

While attempting to evade media coverage and public input, the Fish and Wildlife Service is working to gut the Endangered Species Act (ESA) to legalize commercial exploitation of endangered species both in the US and abroad. They would permit a host of previously illegal activities — including killing endangered species — as long as the activity claims to contribute support to a “conservation” program for the species.

They want to kill endangered species
for sport …trophies …and ivory!

If we don’t act quickly, it will be LEGAL to:

Hunt ENDANGERED species in the U.S.
… as long as the hunting ranch pays something to “conserve” the species.

Import trophy heads and parts from endangered species
… as long as fees paid by the hunters are used by the country to “conserve” the species. Without any check on whether such conservation takes place!

Import endangered animal skins for fur coats and other fashion items.
… as long as the designers send a little cash to a “conservation” program. (They could kill threatened animals too!)

Import endangered or threatened species for circuses and nightclub acts.
We all know what happens to animals forced to “perform” under the big top, or on the Las Vegas strip. These problems will continue as long as (you guessed it!) someone contributes to a conservation fund.

And that’s not all …

Dealers will be free to import as much African elephant ivory as they wish… as long as they claim the money will be used for elephant conservation.

It’s hard to believe the Bush administration would treat their party’s symbol this way. But thousands of elephants are going to die if we don’t act quickly.

Illegal international trade in wildlife and wildlife products is today second only to the illicit drug trade in dollar value, but the proposed policy is silent on standards to verify that money will actually be spent for conservation. In impoverished countries around the globe this policy will only invite fraud, graft, and the extinction of endangered animals.

Please … take action now … send a contribution to help us run national ads sounding the

BREAKING NEWS:

Saddam Hussein Found!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Saddam's Last Stand: Hiding In Hole
After eight months on the run, Saddam made his last stand hiding in a hole in the ground.
And Sanchez said he wasn't found right away. After initially finding nothing during their raid, troops from the 4th Infantry along with special operations personnel cordoned off the area and began looking more closely.
At a small walled compound several miles south of Saddam's home town of Tikrit, soldiers found what Sanchez called a "spider hole" camouflaged with bricks and dirt. The 6-by-8 foot hole was large enough to lie down in. At the bottom was Saddam, out of fight and out of time. Sanchez said Saddam went quietly in the end, a "tired man" presenting a "cooperative posture."

It has been reported that Saddam Hussein was captured this morning at 4:22 AM Pacific Standard Time by US Special Forces, on the outskirts
of Baghdad.
The ex-dictator and number one on the US Forces Wanted list - Hussein was captured at gunpoint, as he attempted to flee via his underground bunker passages, 2 miles beneath, a bombed out Iraqi Regime broadcasting station, in an obscure suburb East of the city.
Coalition troops, who witnessed the events unfold, explained that moments earlier United States marines had sprayed liquid Viagra down the air-vents of the bunker, and the little prick just popped up!

The IRAQ BODY COUNT Project

This is a Human Security project to establish an independent and comprehensive public database of media-reported civilian deaths in Iraq resulting directly from military actions by the USA and its allies in 2003. Results and totals are continually updated and made immediately available on this page and on various IBC counters which may be freely displayed on any website, where they will be automatically updated without further intervention. Casualty figures are derived from a comprehensive survey of online media reports. Where these sources report differing figures, the range (a minimum and a maximum) are given. All results are independently reviewed and error-checked by at least three members of the Iraq Body Count project team before publication.

The project takes as its starting point and builds upon the earlier work of Professor Marc Herold who has produced the most comprehensive tabulation of civilian deaths in the war on Afghanistan from October 2001 to the present, and the methodology has been designed in close consultation with him.

Professor Herold commented: “I strongly support this initiative. The counting of civilian dead looms ever more importantly for at least two reasons: military sources and their corporate mainstream media backers seek to portray the advent of precision guided weaponry as inflicting at most, minor, incidental civilian casualties when, in truth, such is is not the case; and the major source of opposition to these modern ‘wars’ remains an informed, articulate general public which retains a commitment to the international humanitarian covenants of war at a time when most organized bodies and so-called ‘experts’ have walked away from them”.

The IBC Web Counters
Keep your readers at the forefront of the breaking casualty news

The IBC Counters provided on this page carry our rolling update of total civilians reported killed, with both a Minimum and Maximum estimate given for accuracy

In the early 1950s, when Pete Seeger composed a simple, stirring melody for a Lee Hays poem, an enduring folk anthem and call to action was born. “If I Had a Hammer” remains a universal pledge to forge from discord love, justice and freedom. Seeger says of this project: “Hammers, shovels, picks, trowels, brushes, drills, wrenches – all are good tools. Let’s all take a hammer … Let’s find a way to build.”
Join a community building project near you
One of the best – and easiest – ways to make a difference in your community is to get involved in a building or cleanup project. Painting over graffiti, cleaning trash or building a new house are activities that help produce a better community. Shared “sweat equity” also creates neighbors out of strangers.
To get involved, find your state and a city near you.

A PRAYER
FOR THE END OF
NUCLEAR WEAPONS FOOLISHNESS
God of faithfulness and promise,
Lover of all creation,
Hear our prayer for an end to
nuclear weapons testing.
You named us prophets
to preserve and nurture your creation:
all peoples, all life, indeed, the Mother Earth herself.
Enlighten our efforts
to end nuclear weapons testing
research and development;
Energize our wills for
the restoration of creation.
Inspire and guide all who pray and work nonviolently,
So that your promised peace
will fill our world
with lives rich in your love. NEVADA DESERT EXPERIENCE (NDE)
is a faith-based organization
working to end
nuclear weapons testing
through a campaign of prayer, dialogue and nonviolent direct action.
NDE works with groups worldwide calling for a Comprehensive
Test Ban Treaty.
NDE is a voice in the desert
calling people to
nonviolence in the face of violence,
truth in the face of despair,
love in the face of fear.
Please say this prayer daily and
whenever people of peace gather.

Before you decide to take direct action at the Nevada Test Site, it is highly important to familiarize yourself
with the history of the land known as the Nevada Test Site,
and the recent consequences of civil resistance there.
Please review the nonviolence covenant as well.
People in the faith-based nuclear abolitionist movement have held hundreds of interfaith prayer services just outside the entrance to the Nevada Test Site (NTS). This entrance is also called the Mercury Gate, because the town of Mercury is within the Test Site's boundaries and clearly visible several miles beyond our prayer site.

People often cross the white line at the Mercury Gate to indicate the freedom we all have as humans on earth. According to the U.S. government, this is an act of civil disobedience. But also according to U.S., as stipulated in the Treaty of Ruby Valley (1863), the Western Shoshone, of course, are allowed to roam within the boundaries of their country (Western Shoshone lands are called "Newe Sogobia"). Non-Native Americans can be issued permits by the Newe (Shoshone) Marshalls. Thus, with such permits, Non-Natives are granted permission to "gather, go and come" which should rightly be recognized by U.S. officials who understand international relations. So people holding Western Shoshone Permits tend to disagree with the terminology used by the invading forces of the U.S. empire. Permit-holders have the legal, lawful right by Shoshone and international law to be present on either side of the arbitrary line drawn by the weaponeers. Non-permit holders on the D.O.E. side of the line enforce their rules with the power of guns and nuclear weapons. They are in violation of international law. People on both sides of the white line agree that most areas of Newe Sogobia are under occupation by U.S. forces. At the Nevada Test Site, these forces are officially related to the Nye County Sherrif's Department and the Wackenhut Security Company. They generally ignore the issue of the validity of Western Shoshone Permits, and thus operate in violation of international law, as the does the U.S. government  whenever it sees fit.

NONVIOLENCE COVENANT
As a participant, I agree to abide by the following nonviolent discipline, and as part of the preparation for this witness, I will reflect on these commitments:
We will harbor no anger but suffer the anger of the opponent.
The term opponent is borrowed from Gandhi and is meant to indicate one with whom we are in opposition but whom we do not consider to be an enemy.
We will refuse to return the assaults of the opponent.
We will refrain from insults and swearing.
We will protect opponents from insults or attack.
If arrested, we will not resist.
If arrested, we will behave in an exemplary manner. We will not evade the legal consequences of our actions.
As members of the nonviolent demonstration, we will follow the directions of the designated coordinators. In the event of a serious disagreement, one should remove oneself from the action.
Our attitude as conveyed through words, symbols and actions will be one of openness, friendliness, and respect toward all people we encounter, including police officers and Nevada Test Site workers.
We will not damage any property.
We will not bring or use any drugs or alcohol.
We will not run or use any threatening motions.
We will carry no weapons.
We will not engage in symbolic blood pouring.
Plans for our activities are shared with the "authorities."

The Fear Of Radiation

What is it about radiation that taps the deepest fears in man? The Russians have felt it. They took everything but the music when they fled the city of Pripyat in 1986. They were running from the invisible death of Chernobyl -- so radioactive from a meltdown that volunteers were limited to just one minute of work in a cleanup that still goes on.
And you'd better believe that terrorists took notice, nuclear arms expert Gary Milhollin told CBS News Correspondent Jim Stewart.
"You can't see radioactivity," he said. "You can't smell it. You can't hear it, but you know it's there because people say it's there. So we have a formula for fear."
Osama bin Ladin's formula for fear is called a "dirty bomb." He left plans for one behind in Afghanistan. It's a simple scheme that doesn't need a nuclear reactor like Chernobyl -- just any lost or stolen nuclear material, like cobalt pellets from a medical machine. Pack them around a regular explosive, like the one that blew up U.S. embassies in Africa, and scientists tell Congress you're looking at a mass evacuation.
"If it were spread over a square mile, that would make the area uninhabitable,'' said Dr. Steven Koonin, with the California Institute of Technology.
The scientists paint a scary scenario of a dirty bomb set off in lower Manhattan. Contamination would spread over 300 city blocks, up to Central Park. Demolition might be necessary. Property losses would near $2 trillion, estimates Dr. Henry Kelly with the Federation of American Scientists.
"The biggest impact of a dirty bomb is not killing people. This is a very poor way to kill people. But the problem that you're gonna face is contaminating a large area,'' said Kelly.
An area considered most likely for such an attack is Washington itself. A likely target might be somewhere along Pennsylvania Avenue, with the White House at one end and the Capitol at the other. For maximum impact, experts say, the bomb would be placed in the middle.
A bomb set off at the corner of 10th street and Pennsylvania could contaminate the FBI headquarters, the Justice Department, and possibly the Commerce and Treasury Departments -- depending on the weather that day.
"If you're going down Pennsylvania Avenue you'll have wind swirls. There'll be hot spots. There'll be places where it's carried a long way down the avenue and up to Capitol Hill,'' said Kelly.
Only a handful of people would die from the actual blast, said Kelly. And the risk from radiation would likely be limited. But that's not the greatest worry.
"One of our concerns is that more people would be injured in the evacuation than would be injured in the actual event. You could cause real terror in people not realizing the level of danger they're exposed to."
And causing real terror is what terrorism is all about. Whether that means taking down whole buildings -- or just making them too risky to live in.
