Go owls! Graduated in 79, then played in a road band for a short-while living in motels. Joined the Air Force and did 8 years as Systems Analyst for Supply Accounts (big computers), getting to do real cool traveling.  Got out and took my degree in Computer Science and now working in Charleston WV.  Currently taking violin lessons and mastering banjo (hmm, trying to master banjo). I'm a volunteer usher for WV symphony, and go home to farm (War) every weekend.

Avocations: I research the mountains around the world, the mountains amazing contributions to the world of meaning, mountain people's relationship with the world at large, and the mountain's history in macro-economics. New definitions of sustainable environments defined from a regional perspective.  Football, music (violin, piano, guitar, banjo).  Astronomy. Generalist science, math and physics (a top down approach).  History.  Experiemental gardening. Greenhouses.

Loves: The Broncos, the Herd and of course the Owls, this Bach piece that is currently whipping my tail.

Loves to see defeated: the Yankess, the Cowboys, people who do not play fairly in the real world.

I graduated from BCHS in 1963.  I lived in Newhall, WV, and went to grade school at Newhall Grade School.  Jr. High School was atBerwind, WV and then on to Big Creek where I graduated.  I can't think of a better place to have spent my earlier years than Newhall.  The people were so caring and honest--unlike most today.  I began my career at the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Washington, DC. I have been in Arlington, VA, for 44 years.  I retired in 1999 from the USDA as Director of Public Liaison in the Office of Information, and have had a wonderful retirement thus far with my soul mate of 43 years, Larry Click from War and Vallscreek, WV.  We never had children but have had so many delightful years of traveling and experiencing life together that we never felt that we missed out. My health is good but unfortunately, Larry's kidneys are failing.  He needs a kidney and is on the list to receive one.  Hopefully he'll get one soon and we'll be able to continue our life together. We have the largest collection of patented carbide caps known and a mining artifact collection that you need to see. We have spent a large amount of time with our collecting and have met some interesting people in the process.  If you are ever in the Arlington, VA/Washington, DC, area, please give us a call or stop by for a visit--we'd love it!!  Dorothy and Larry Click, 1021 North Jefferson Street, Arlington, Virginia  22205  703-241-3748

Lipe, Christy Jackson

Hello Owls!! My name is Christy Jackson Lipe, I am a 1990 graduate of Big Creek High.I grew up in Caretta/Bartley. I got married straight out of Big Creek in August of 1990 to Jimmy Cooper from Yukon #2, he was a 1986 graduate. We have 3 sons, Robert Andrew who is now 14 and twins, James Adam and Joseph Aaron, who are now 11. Robert is starting his Freshman year, at a small high school, Blacksburg High, as back up quarterback/wide receiver. He is so excited, and this is a small town high school, much like old BCHS. Adam LOVES soccer, and horses, and Joseph is very talented in art and writing. I am so very proud of all my boys. Jimmy and I divorced, and after being convinced that I would never let another man in my life, God smiled on me, and in 2000, I found the man of my dreams. His name is Brad, and we have now been married almost 5 years. We live in Smyrna South Carolina, (population 59 and a CAT, NO KIDDING) and I work in Charlotte as an Administrative Medical Secretary, and CMA at the hospital. Brad works for a huge Torro company in Charlotte, that ships irrigation/lawn equipment worldwide, and of course they handle all the turf and irrigation for Carolina Panthers, and Lowe's motor speedway. (Can you say FREE tickets?) Brad and I have a new baby boy, born December 14, 2004. His name is Jackson Bradley, and he is the sunshine of the family. His older 3 brothers adore him and he has really brought our family together. I lost my dad, Dec. 1, 2003, to a sudden heart attack, he was only 55. He was chief Bus driver of the Big Creek district in the mid-late 70's. It has been hard wondering what he would think of his new grandson, knowing that the other 3 adored him and he adored them likewise. Would love to hear from anyone, my e-mail address is ACLipe@msn.com  Take care and God Bless!!

I would have graduated in 1970, but like alot of kids during that time, felt I knew everything and dropped out. I have since went back and got my GED and am now a nurse. I have been married to my best friend John for 19 yrs.He is retired from the Navy so we have traveled quite alot in our yrs together. We have 3 beautiful Children, Allison 18 (who is leaving for the Navy in Oct.) Amanda 16, and John Matthew 14. 3 Years ago God gave us the opportunity to adopt a baby boy who we named Joseph Taylor. I do have to say it has been an experience at our age. We moved to Richlands in 1998 from Millington, Tn. We occasionally take a ride over into McDowell County. It is really hard for John to imagine that English used to have 2 grocery stores and was a larger town. As all of us, I think often to the way iot was when we were all carefree kids.

Breen,  Tammy Coleman

Hey everyone, my name is Tammy Breen (Coleman), I graduated from BCHS in 1983, wow what a year!  Going to BCHS was the best thing, I had alot of friends and alot of good times.  Went to the 15 year class reunion saw some old classmates and it was great to see everyone and to find out what happened to each other.  Now a little about myself, shortly after graduation I attended Bluefield State College for 2 years where I majored in Secretarial Science.  I left in 1985 and moved to Stafford, VA, where my aunt helped me get my very first job.  I worked for The American Legion International Headquarters in Washington DC for 4 years, I left there and now I work for Sheet Metal Workers' International Association as the Secretary for the Department of Organization.  Its a really great job but the commute is very tiresome and long, I live about 2 hours from Washington DC in Spotsylvania County, VA with my husband and 2 children.  I have a daughter that is 12 almost 13 her name is Brittany and my son who is 10 and his name is Daniel.  They are the joys of my life and without them I don't know where I would be.  I go home several times a year, well every chance I get anyway, that is.  I love going home, it gets me back to my roots and relaxes me.  I live in a very stressed out area of the country and the people just isn't the same as down home.  If anyone would like to email me my email address is rtbdbreen@aol.com, hope to talk to ya'll soon!

Saxon, April Van Dyke

I'm a graduate of '96.  I tried college for a semester @ WVU the following fall that year.  I didn't care for it so I tried getting a job around home.  I'm sure most of you know that's almost impossible.  I had been talking to my Dad since 10th grade about joining the Air Force.  He didn't like the idea since he had served during Vietnam in the Army.  So he finally gave me his blessing and I went to BMT in Feb 98.  I lived in Salt Lake City, Utah for 6 years, spending almost half that time in Vegas.  I just recently moved to Anchorage, Alaska in November.  It really is beautiful up here.  Along the way I met my husband in May 99 and got married in Jan 00.  We bought a house that June and he went to Korea that November.  I confirmed that I was pregnant Jan 01.  Jason tried to plan his leave around my due date but missed the baby by 2 weeks.  Konner Saxon was born 20 Jul 01 and now has almost completed potty training.  I'm keeping my fingers crossed on that one.  Anyway I saw Christy Gray, Kristal Stump and Eric Oxford were on here before.  I thought it would be cool to talk to them and anyone else from the young days of youth.  So please if you remember me feel free to email me I'd love to hear from you.  My email is littledudes12002@yahoo.com I look forward to hearing from ya'll.

Hey Folks... I'm Peggy Payne Blevins.. I lived in English and graduated from BCHS in 1983. Gosh what I wouldn't do to get there again.... Anyways, i'm divorced now for the past 6 years and am raising my daughter Brittany Erin who will be 18 on April 11th and graduating this year. I'm very proud of her!  This year she was named to the All State Honorable Mention Basketball Team!  The only one from Southern WV on the girl's or boy's team!  But of course, at 5-11, she's got one hellava reach on her.  LOL.   She will be attending Bluefield State and majoring in Political Science.  Gosh!!.  I'm getting old and yes, very much single and looking! I'll be going to Dwana Burnette's wedding reception (yes, she finally is tying the knot on May 15th!) on June 5th.  That's my buddy and we still keep in touch quite often.  I miss my friends from school even though I see most of them at the Rocket Boy's Festivals.  We have a "HOOT" there.  Anyone who knew me in school would never have guessed that I would have ever became a Corrections Officer, a City PD Officer for Northfork and a 911 Dispatcher... Also part-time EMTB for the EMS... LOL.  I'm now the Office Manager for the McDowell County Solid Waste Authority, Chief of Police in Anawalt and the Public Relations Officer for Homer Hickam.  I'm living in Coalwood now which has been my home for the past 14 years... Very community involved and a really nice place to live... Thanks Sheila for a wonderful site... We need more like this... Thanks to everyone for the tremendous support that you gave to Brittany and I during the flood... Even though we lost everything we had, in a time of need, good people came to help us out.

Lanier, Randy

Latest update now is that we live in Roanoke,VA as of November 2006.  I took an assignment still with Bridgestone/Firestone but working with White Tire in Roanoke, VA.  We purchased the company and they asked if anyone wanted to move to Roanoke, VA and serve as a coordinator for the purchase and work with the management team at White Tire.  I asked my wife how she felt and being the best lady in the world she said, Let's go back home.....
Come see us.
Randy & Nancy

Hello fellow Owls ! Greetings from Nancy & Randy Lanier.  I graduated in 1968, and went to Concord for one year and then transferred to Bluefield State College. I worked for one summer in the Coalwood mines to get enough money to return to school at Bluefield State. I worked full time at Buddys Discount while going through school and graduated from Bluefield State in 1973 with a degree in Business Administration.  I accepted a job with Firestone Tire and Rubber Co. upon graduation and have stayed with them for just under 32 years.  Boy time passes quickly !  We  have lived in Waynesboro, Va. area, then Richmond, Va. for 13 years and then Buffalo, New York, close to Niagara Falls.  We relocated in 1990 to the Lancaster, PA. area (the Amish country) and we have been here to stay for awhile.... I think !  It's been almost 15 years here.  I married  the best lady in the world who was then Nancy Boyd from Bramwell, W.VA.  She is Boots & Bunk Smiths niece from Coalwood.  That makes her Debbie & Joe Mike Smith's cousin.  We have 2 children, Brian and Tracy.  Brian is still single and Tracy was just married in June 03.  I am now mentally, physically, emotionally and financially drained after the wedding !  Its still a good feeling...  We still make W.VA day in Hillsville, Va but its tough to travel twice back for the Rocket Boys day in Coalwood about 4 weeks later.  We are on hotmail email list and I love to hear from old friends and classmates.  I hate junk email and other non personal email.  I would rather hear how you are doing. email is lanierrandy@hotmail.com.  God has richly blessed me beyond all capabilities and has always provided above and beyond what I could dream .  My prayer is that others have found a loving saviour in Christ and have looked to serve HIM.  Always keep the important things first, God, family and friends (which means all you Owls !!)
Boy, did I get on a roll tonight and ramble !  Must be at that age these days.  Take care and see you soon I hope.

May God bless you each and every one!

Hey, Owls!  Glad to finally be in the "Owl's Nest."  This is a great site and I am looking forward to visiting and following all the additions/changes/etc.

I am from the 1968 Class of Big Creek.  I have lived in Bristol, VA since 1975.  I am married to my best friend, Darrell, and we have two grown kids, Richie (23) and Stephanie (28).  Our one and only granddaughter is D'Arcy, 20 months old.  I teach English at Tennessee High School.
Some of the things I love include:  collecting books, lighthouse memorabilia, pictures, stories, and friends; reading almost anything, but I love Adriana Trigiani, David Baldacci, Toni Morrison, and Lee Smith; writing poetry, short stories, letters, email, grocery lists, favorite web sites, and my journal; going to new places which include anywhere I can get to without flying; playing with D'Arcy; sipping hot coffee with Darrell or dancing a slow/fast one; planting flowers and pulling weeds; cooking special meals for my family or friends; listening to really good bluegrass; spending time with my kids; plundering junk shops; decorating my home; and learning anything new.

I count a wonderful family that loves me, a husband who is one in 100 zillion, great kids/granddaughter, good health, and solid values as my most prized blessings.  I am proud to be a Big Creek Owl!  Hoot!  Hoot!

Hartsock, Anne Elizabeth

I graduated in 1972, attended Concord College, and have been in the Princeton, Bluefield area since then.  I married Bucky Bauguess in 1975 and we had two daughters, Amber Lee (now 24) and Megan Anne (now 20).    In 1991, I remarried to Donald Joe Riffe ('68) who had 2 daughters, Jennifer Joelle (now23) and Erica Payton (now 22).  We had all 4 of the girls with us.  His... and mine... and then God blessed us with a very sweet SURPRISE that was "ours".  Her name is Sarah Kathryn and she is now a very grown up "six-going-on-sixteen" year old.  The older girls have all graduated, either attended or are attending college, and 2 have married.  It's just the 3 of us at home now.  Life is more manageable, but a little tooooo quiet at times for this Mom.

Now for the news:  In January, Erica and Elijah gave us our first grandchild!  A beautiful little girl named MacKenzi Gayle.  I never knew it was possible to feel this much love.  I just never knew...

I will try to post her picture.  I'm not too good at that stuff yet, but she's too perfect and beautiful and incredible to keep to myself.  It would be selfish not to at least let others LOOK at her.  I'm almost to the point of letting others hold her now!
Just had to brag a little... Anne

Graduated in 1954 - Went to Wash DC to work for the FBI.  I enlisted in the DC National Guard and started working for them in September '54.  Went to OCS in 1961 and stayed with the National Guard until my retirement in 1991.  I was the DC National Guard Chief of Staff when I retired.

I am currently living in Leavenworth, KS (outside the big wall).  However, I have had enough winters and cold weather, so I am in the process of selling my home and going to move to Tucson, AZ.  I am divorced and have two children, George in California and a daughter Paula, who is married and lives in Kansas.  I have a beautiful Granddaughter, EMMA, who is the love of my life.

An update!  I have relocated to Tucson, AZ as of June 16, 2001.   Right now all I can say is it is HOT - without the humidity!  Getting ready for the monsoons, which will last, I am told, for about 30 days.  GO "OWLS"

Reaser, Kay Barnette

After three great years at BCHS I graduated in May, 1956.  I went to Concord College, graduating from there in 1960.  In August of that year, I married Emory "Buddy" Reaser, from Princeton, WV.  We have one son, Mike, who lives in Atlanta, GA.  "Buddy" is retired from the federal government.  We moved to Jacksonville, FL, in 1973 with his job.  We like it here and so when he retired, we decided to stay put...after all, lots of other people retire "to Florida"...we were already here.

Over the years I dabbled in teaching school in various places we lived (WV, KY, MD).  I have also been a church secretary.  Currently I am the substitute secretary at our church.  Buddy fills his days with golf games.  I enjoy using the computer and have re-connected with many of my old friends from Bartley Elementary/Junior High School and BCHS through the Internet.  My life-long #1 hobby is reading.  Between the computer and books, I stay as busy as I want to be.

Roberts, Norma (Harrison)

Hi everyone,
After graduation in l954, I moved to Charleston, WV to attendbusiness school.  Due to my mother's illness I returned home to Squire. I worked for NR&P Company at Newhall for awhile, then transferred to the co. store at Havaco, where I lived until I married and moved to Columbus, Georgia.

My late husband, Harry, was in the Big Creek class of '57, died in '76 of Leukemia.  We had twins, girl and boy, who will be 39 yrs old in June.  My son has two children, girl and boy.  I am a proud grandmother of course!  Now that I am retired I have the priviledge of spending more time with them.  I have told them all about the Big Creek Owls, and how we appreciate our former classmates, especially now that we are older.

One more little tidbit, I came from a very mixed-up family... I, and two of my sisters are Owls, two brothers and two sisters were Welch High grads, my father taught at Gary High.  Well you know where my loyalty remained!

Smith, Sheila Payne

Hello Owls!  I'm the first born of eight, and grew up at Yukon #2.  Graduated from BCHS in 1968; married my soulmate, Noah Smith in December 1970.  Lived in Princeton, WV for about 15 years, and then moved to Florida, near the Tampa area, where we lived for about 10 years.  After leaving Florida, we were "roaming gypsies" for about 5 years, living in Knoxville, TN; Greensboro, NC; Clemons, NC; Winston-Salem, NC; Greer, SC; and Bristol, TN.  Now, we're back in Florida where we've SETTLED DOWN, once and for all.  We didn't realize we had a piece of paradise when we left it, but now we're trying to recreate what we had.

When we lived in Bristol, we reconnected to some friends we went to school with, and it was wonderful, the time we shared.  They had established an "Owls dinner club" that met once a month, and we had such happy times.

I've met some great new friends through this Big Creek Owls website, and love to see new members join.  I encourage all of you to post your bio, messages and photos, and to invite Owls to join!  Make this site your own.

I created this website, so if you have any questions, suggestions, etc., please write to me.  Use the subject line BIG CREEK OWLS in your email, and write to me at:
