Onyx is usually black or brown with white bands (Sardonyx) but can also be found in green, gray, red (carnelian) and tan colors. It is similar to agate, except that it has straight not curved bands of color.  Some onyx is natural but much is produced by the staining of agate.

Onyx was associated with the ancient Greeks and Romans. The name comes from the Greek word onux, which means fingernail. The story behind the stone: One day Cupid cut the fingernails of Venus with an arrowhead while she was sleeping. He left the clippings scattered on the sand. So no part of the heavenly body would perish the fates turned them into stone. Black isn't normally associates with fingernails, but in the times of the Greeks almost all colors of chalcedony ‘fingernail’ white to dark brown and black were called onyx. Later that the Romans narrowed the term to refer to black and dark brown colors only.

For healing Onyx is used to strengthen the heart, kidneys, nerves, eyes. Onyx is said to help achieve a calmer state and get a more restful sleep. Onyx helps to eliminate apathy, stress and neurological disorders.

The white and tan Onyx promotes stability and eases immovability where there has been an unwillingness to change or move before.

I have not tested each of these stones and all their magical properties so can not verify all the properties any stone is said to possess.
