Makeup Artist Magazine The Premiere magazine for make-up artists and movie enthusiasts. Make-Up Artist Magazine is read in 50 countries around the world and was created in 1996 by Emmy Award Winning make-up artist Michael Key. THE HISTORY OF MAKE-UP ARTIST MAGAZINE "I wanted a magazine that could speak to make-up artists as a group." Michael Key’s vision began as a two-sided newsletter and has developed into an internationally read magazine, featuring cover stories and articles on the entertainment industry’s top make-up artists, the most innovative make-up techniques, current product news, and invaluable information available nowhere else but Make-Up Artist Magazine. THE BEGINNING As a member of make-up artist union Local 706 IATSE, Michael was elected for what was then termed "Craft President" (now "Make-up Director"). In this position, he was required to have one meeting a year where other artists in the union came together to demonstrate new techniques to each other and discuss new ideas. Michael saw this meeting as one of the best things Local 706 had to offer; these were some of the best artists in the world – the Hollywood union make-up artists – and this was a wonderful opportunity to learn from each other. At the time the meeting was held in the back room of a church with only thirty people attending. Michael believed these meetings could be held on a much grander scale. He moved the meetings from the back of a church to a hotel conference room where make-up companies could present their products, and artists could give presentations in a more professional atmosphere. Attendance increased from thirty people to over one hundred, and the meetings were held four times a year instead of just once. Still, Michael felt there was more information that should reach fellow make-up artists so he had an idea to start a newsletter. Entitled "Craft News," this newsletter started out as a simple flier. Highly knowledgeable in computer technology, Michael decided to use his own equipment to produce a better quality two-sided flier. This proved much more costly so he went before the Local 706 Executive Board to ask for a $500 donation. They loved the idea, but could not donate the funds, so Michael raised the money himself. What followed was an informative newsletter that was remarkably well-received by the artists who received it. Each newsletter that followed doubled in size, and Michael found himself working on the project full-time. Due to this he discovered what the industry was lacking. He wanted to increase awareness to the average person, educate up-coming producers and directors used to making low-budget films about how an excellent make-up artist could significantly improve the end result of their film-making, and provide cosmetic companies with a forum to reach their target clientele. Make-Up Artist Magazine was born. For more show info go here June 2002 Pasedena California Know as "The Show" to the make-up world, the International Make-Up Artist Trade Show developed out of Local 706 "Craft" meetings. There simply wasn’t enough time or space to provide as much education as needed. Michael also had many requests from non-union artists wanting to attend these meetings. The writing was on the wall. There were no trade shows specifically for make-up artists. Cosmetic companies expressed a desire for such an event, and knowing just how much education could be provided Michael announced the First Annual International Make-Up Artist Trade Show would be held in August 1997. Accustomed to one hundred people attending his Union meetings, the company was overwhelmed by the response to the Show. Like Kevin Costner, Michael discovered "If you build it they will come." Ticket sales soared and people came from all over the world. The Show allowed artists to custom-tailor what they wanted to see. It offered a completely diverse mix of presentations, products, demonstrations, and education by some of the biggest names in the business. The whole event was an unprecedented moment in history. Michael describes it as "a Woodstock of make-up; it was the largest gathering of artists and make-up enthusiasts in the world." Like Make-Up Artist Magazine, the Trade Show continues to further the vision to educate and reach make-up artists around the world.
