Mor Gregorius Gheevarghese
(Perumpilly thirumeni)

Born as the third son of Parapallil Mathew Asan and Annamma of Puthupally in 1933 Thulam 8th, Varghese received his theological education at Thrikkothamangalam Mor Sharbil Deyro and Manjinikkara Mor Ignatius Deyro. Gheevarghese was ordained priest by Mor Yulius Elias on August 1, 1959 and for several years served as vicar of Perumpilly St. George's Simhasana Church. Consecrated metropolitan by Moran Mor Ignatius Ya`qub III in 1974 for Cochin diocese with additional charge of Kottayam diocese, Mor Gregorius became the Metropolitan of Kottayam after the 1982 Synod at Cochin presided by H.H. Patriarch Zakka I. In the early 1970s, when the church in Malankara became divided again over the role of the Patriarchate of Antioch, Mor Gregorius provided the faithful, who did not wish to sever their long spiritual association with Antioch, with able leadership. Due to his long association with the Perumpilly church, which he reconstructed in 1976, Mor Gregorius was affectionately called Perumpilly thirumeni.

Following the death of Catholicose Paulose II on September 2, 1996, His Grace presided over the Synod of the Malankara Syrian Orthodox Church.

After about 90 years of ligtigation the Supreme Court of India proclaimed the final judgment in 25th June 1995. According to the judgment, there is no two Church in Malankara, only 2 factions of the same Church and The Church in Malankara is integral part of the Universal Syrian Orthodox Church and the Church is not autocephalous. The Patriarch of Antioch and All the East must be honoured as the Spiritual Supreme Head of the Church and Catholicose is the regional head and he will rule the Church according to the constituation of the church. Interalia, "the usage of the title, "St. Thomas throne," is honorific." The catholicose facation is still reluctant to accept the Patriarch of Antioch as the spritual Supreme Head of the Church and also hestiates to approve the fact that the Syrian Church in India is adivision of the Universal Syrian Orthodox Church. Therefor even after the final judgement the dispute and split continue.

He was called to eternal rest on February 22, 1999 and his remains are interred in the sanctuary of the Perumpilly Simhasana Church.
