Top 20 supported clubs in PNG

Below, is a table stating the top 20 best supported Rugby League clubs in the whole of Papua New Guinea. 2000:

Port Moresby Broncos (Formerly Vipers') 8,700
Goroka Lahinis 7,200
Lae Bombers 6,600
Mt Hagen 6,100
Island Rabaul Gurias 5,900
Madang 5,200
Kavieng 4,100
Wau/Bulolo 4,020
Bialla 3,900
Wewak 3,870
Kiunga 3,700
Mendi 3,400
Minj 3,150
Buka 1,100
Kundiawa 3,050
Nondugl 2,800
Ramu 2,800
Kimbe 2,700
Wabag 2,600
Alotau 2,410

So, as you can probably gather from the above table, fans turn up in numbers on the island of Papua New Guinea and New Guinea. The attendances may not be on par with Soccer in England or Brazil, American Football (Gridiron) in the United States of America or Australian Rules in Australia. But taking in consideration that only just over 4 million people live in Papua New Guinea, and the fact transport is minimum, attendances in Papua New Guinea for Rugby League matches are outstanding.

Capacity crowds of upto 15,000 for internationals and major domestic finals is a regular occurance in Papua New Guinea. Hundreds of thousands of fans are forced to watch outside the ground. Many fans have to treck miles through deadly jungles for days just to watch a match which lasts 80 minutes of entertainment. That just shows how commited sports fans are in the country of PNG.

Below, a capacity 13,000 fans turn up to the National Oval in Goroka, The Highlands to witness Papua New Guinea take on Australia's national Kangaroos' in 2001.
