The Man The Legend
The Intimidator!
Full name: Ralph Dale Earnhardt
Place of birth: Kannapolis, North Carolina
Date of birth: April 29th, 1951
Date of death: February18th, 2001
Dale began racing automobiles as a teenager. His first Nascar race was in 1975 driving the K2.
The famous K2 was a 1956 Ford Victoria owned by David Oliver. The engine was built by Ralph Earnhardt. Dale raced the K2 at the old Concord Motor Speedway in Concord, North Carolina. The car had an apricot metal flake roof and it was decided that the whole car should match the roof. They mixed the paint up, painted the car and when it dried, it was pink. They didn't have enough money to repaint it, so it remained pink!
Dale soon worked his way up to the Winston Cup Circuit. His first Winston Cup victory came in 1979. After 15 races in the Winston series the 16th started a long line of victories. The first being the Southeastern 500 at Bristol International Speedway in Bristol, Tennessee. In 1979 Dale earned Nascars rookie of the year status. But Dale wasn't satisfied with rookie of the year and turned the 1980 season into the first of what would be many championship seasons. Dale was the first driver to get rookie of the year and the Winston Cup Championship the following year. Dales Winston Cup Championships came in 1980, 1986, 1987, 1990, 1991, 1993, and 1994. Richard Petty is the only other driver to have an astounding 7 championships along with Dale.
On February 18th, 2001 Dale met his untimely death on the 43rd lap of the Daytona 500.
Dale was famous for as he put it "Rattlin cages".
When he would go to pass he would slightly "nudge" the car about to be passed.
Whether you loved him or hated him
Dale wasn't just a part of Nascar he was Nascar!
