Special Interest Groups

Arts & Smarts, Bridge, Current Events, Favorite Books, Gourmand , Community Theatre, Walkabouts

ARTS & SMARTS

The Arts & Smarts Group is interested in learning more about the incredible museums found in the Washington, DC area. We plan monthly visits to these museums, usually on the third Friday of the month, but the date may vary due to the timing of special exhibits. Our tours are generally led by museum docents. Some members plan lunches around our museum visits, and following the tours, you are welcome to wander on your own. Information about current tours is available in the LLI Newsletter, on the LLI Web Site, or by contacting Donna Trogler at 703-751-8932 or Dtrogler@aol.com.

BRIDGE GROUP

The Bridge Group meets twice monthly at the Mason District Governmental Center from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. (bring a bag lunch). It is not always possible to reserve rooms on the second and fourth Wednesdays of the month, but those days will be our first choice when making reservations. Please call Coordinators Bob or Merry Huley (703-534-4819) if you plan to attend. Your call not only confirms the meeting date, but also enables us to obtain sufficient tables for attendees. All are welcome. Note that if there are "extra" people, Bridge play is rotated (four hands per game) among all present. You do not need a partner to attend. We hope you can join us!

The Mason District Governmental Center is located at 6507 Columbia Pike, Annandale. Directions from the Beltway East on Little River Turnpike (Route 236). Turn left onto John Marr Drive (next light after passing Giant Food on the left). Turn right at the next light, which is Columbia Pike. Go through several traffic lights. Following the traffic light at the intersection with Whispering Lane, there is a sign in the median reading "Fairfax County Police Station." Proceed a short distance and turn right into the parking lot of the Center.

Coordinators: Bob and Merry Huley

COMMUNITY THEATRE GROUP

The Theatre Group is open to the all LLI members. We attend plays and musicals that are available at the numerous venues in the Washington metropolitan area. Call Helen Clark (703-573-1671) or the LLI office (703-503-0600) for further information.

CURRENT EVENTS GROUP

The LLI Current Events Group meets monthly to discuss a topic of current interest. Join us if you want to share your ideas or learn more about current events. We want all who wish to speak to have a chance. After an hour of discussion, we choose the topic for the next meeting; then we open discussion on current events of interest.

All LLI members are welcome at all meetings of the Current Events Group. Information on upcoming meetings can be found in LLI’s Newsletter, the course catalog, or the LLI home page. For further information, contact Shirley Lotz at 703-978-2977 or svoltz@cox.net. .

Place: Mason District Governmental Center, Annandale

FAVORITE BOOKS CLUB

The Favorite Books Club meets monthly to discuss books the group has identified for review. The members select from a variety of genres, e.g., fiction, non-fiction, historial, contemporary, best sellers, classics, etc. We try to select only books available in paperback. Information on each selected book is published in the monthly LLI Newsletter prior to discussion.

Dates & Time: Third Thursday of the month at 11:30 a.m. -1:00 p.m. (you may bring a bag lunch)

Place: Mason District Governmental Center, Annandale

Coordinator: Arlene Gribben 703-569-0357 or arlenegribb@aol.com

GOURMAND GROUP

The Gourmand Group meets monthly and is open to any LLI member who enjoys adventures in dining out. Each month a member plans a particular meal that can include a traditional meal prepared at home, a full English tea, or an ethnic meal at a local restaurant. Contact either Mary Underwood (703-329-8391 or maryunderwood29@verizon.net) or Sarah Bell (703-978-4763 or sarahbell01@cox.net) for further information.

WALKABOUTS

The Walkabouts Group gets together twice a month for an outdoor walk for fun and health. Light rain or snow does not cancel our walks. Each lasts about one hour. On a rotation basis, someone from the group leads each walk and someone “brings up the rear” to prevent anyone from getting lost. At the end of each walk, we plan for at least the next two walks. To get the current walking schedule, look to the LLI Newsletter, LLI web site, or contact the Coordinator, Liddell McLeod, at 703-698-8366 or liddell_mcl@cox.net.
