MEMBERSHIP
According to the terms of Articles I and V of the Charter Membership in the OAU is open to all "independent sovereign African States and neighbouring Islands".
The OAU is composed at present of fifty-three independent African States as follows, in the alphabetical order:
ALGERIA, ANGOLA, BENIN, BOTSWANA, BURKINA FASO, BURUNDI, CAMEROON, CAPE VERDE, CENTRAL AFRICAN REPUBLIC, CHAD, COMOROS, COTE D'IVOIRE, DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO, DJIBOUTI, EGYPT, EQUATORIAL GUINEA, ERITREA, ETHIOPIA, GABON, GAMBIA, GHANA, GUINEA, GUINEA-BISSAU, KENYA, LESOTHO, LIBERIA, LIBYA, MADAGASCAR, MALAWI, MALI, MAURITANIA, MAURITIUS, MOZAMBIQUE, NAMIBIA, NIGER, NIGERIA, RWANDA, SAHARAWI ARAB DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC, SAO TOME AND PRINCIPE, SEYCHELLES, SENEGAL, SIERRA LEONE, SOMALIA, SOUTH AFRICA, SUDAN, SWAZILAND, TANZANIA, TOGO, TUNISIA, UGANDA, ZAMBIA, ZIMBABWE.
