Helen Clark was elected Prime Minister of New Zealand on 27 November 1999. Her rise to the top of New Zealand politrix is the culmination of almost thirty years of involvement with the Labour Party, and the latest chapter in a remarkable story which began in New Zealand’s provincial, conservative heartland.
