Headline: JRT Genetic Research Project at UC Davis

Story:

I just want to encourage all of you humans owned by JRTs to participate in the University of California, Davis Department of Animal Sciences study of "eye disorders, deafness, and leg disorders in Jack Russell Terriers."  This research project is funded by the Jack Russell Terrier Network of Northern California, a not for profit organization  The data collected will not only be used for this genetic study but will be added to the Institute of Genetic Disease Control (GDC).  Both affected and unaffected terriers of all club affiliations and registries are encouraged to participate.  It's completely free and will benefit the breed for generations to come!  Thanks!

Hello,
I have a 6 year old female JRK, Mollie. She is the best dog I have ever had, and my wife and I love her to death, but resentlyshe has started losing control of her blatter when asleep. She seems to be much worse when she has had an active day outside. She will fall asleep and start to jerk as if having a dream and the next thing you know you or the sofa are soaking wet. Story:

hello everyone, i'm carrie (it might be slightly obvious with the nickname).  i'm 17 and i've had a JRT my whole life.  i'm on my third one, cotton (4 yrs) who is definitley MY princess!  our idea of a good day is sitting on the couch watching tv and snuggling the whole time (with breaks for her to park at something nonexistent while i get something to eat).  right now she is convinced she's beaten the system as has been sleeping in my bed for 3 days now (she stays in a crate usually and she hates it!).

about my other two:  my parents got reggie in 1984 and i came along four years later, so he was already the prince of the house when i was born, and he gladly gave up that title for me.  he was a very typical JRT.  there are pictures of him "mysteriously" standing on the dining room table when all the chairs were pushed in, but there are also photos of him sitting on the couch with me as a toddler and letting me treat him like any toddler treats a dog . . . smacking him in the face.  sadly, he died when i was two.  he had a heart defect when he was five and after several surgeries and no sign of getting better, mom and dad decided to euthanize him.

but we weren't alone for long, because we adopted skuttles a month and a half later.  skuttles (we think) was 3 already and (we also think) a runt and abused.  the vet reggie went to called my parents about a JRT who was going to be put to sleep for no reason at all (well, because she wasn't a good hunting dog), so we adopted her.  along with her came a slew of health issues and psychological issues.  skuttles was incredibly sweet . . . as sweet as they come . . . but because of her abuse she was very submissive to my dad and always had problems with "going" in the house.  we also couldn't get her to play like a proper dog, but we loved her anyway, despite the lupus, the arthritis, the tumor in her eye (she had her eye removed because it got so big it started coming out through the eyeball), the rashes and sores on her tummy that we had to get removed many many many times, the tooth decay.  in so many words she got dealt a bad hand, but she ended up being with us for 11 years--and what a blessing she was!  i was in seventh grade when skuttles had gotten so weak that she couldn't even jump up on the couch (we had to put her basket by the couch so she could still be near us) and her sores were so horrible she had to have her e-collar on constantly so she wouldn't lick them and we had to keep gauze taped to her belly at all times because her sores would start randomly bleeding and then she started getting sick and going in the house all the time.  we (mom, dad, brother, and i) decided it would be kinder to put her to sleep and end her pain.  THAT was a really awful day.  we cried for weeks.

but cotton, our current baby--wow!  this is a very different love i am experiencing.  according to mom, it's a feeling just like a having a new baby in the house--you want to hold her all the time and you talk baby-talk to her, and you want to nap with her  . . . i wouldn't know because i have no children of my own (thank goodness!), but she is my little baby.  to make things even more pathetic, my nickname for her is Princess Girl and she even has little jewels on her collar.

thank you for letting my rave about my dogs!

CARRIE
