| IN MEMORY OF MICK ORSICH FEBRUARY 20, 1945 - SEPTEMBER 21, 2004 | | Mick Orsich, a long time race fan, got his start in racing back in the 60’s as a scorer at Hummingbird Speedway. He was involved with other racing facilities during the years Hummingbird did not operate, and took over the managing duties of Hummingbird upon its reopening in 2000. He was the track’s flagman during part of the 2003 & all of the 2004 season. Mick was diagnosed with esophageal cancer in 2003, and vowed to fight the disease to the very end. After surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy treatments, he went back to work as a foreman at Brockway Mould in a mere five weeks. Early in the 2004 season, drivers at the speedway presented Mick with a plaque for his dedicated service while battling his illness. Mick lost his battle with the disease on September 21, 2004 as he succumbed just three days after the racing season ended at the speedway. Even though it was a tremendous loss to the speedway family, we must move on without Mick. But we do so remembering not only the man, but also the many things he taught us. Everyone at Hummingbird Speedway is proud to have been associated with Mick. He was a great fan of racing, a dedicated employee, and - most importantly - a good friend. |
