Just Desserts ~ Snacking Habits ~

Imagine this: One Brussels Griffon had three stomach x-rays before he had been with his family for two months! He would eat / swallow almost anything. It is not uncommon!

Snacks are appealing: My griff doesn't normally snoop or dig into things inside the house unless they are little, foodlike, and on the floor. I can comfortably place the sealed garbage bag at the door until I leave to take it out. Until yesterday, I wouldn't have worried about anything we left in bags.

While shopping, we left two bags of deli goodies in the back seat. For a few minutes, I left my griff in the front seat so he could see out the window. We were gone and within eyesight for only minutes. Within moments, he had jumped into the back to rip open the plastic bag containing our rye bread. He was happily munching away on a lovely fresh crust when we returned.

Luckily he hadn't delved into the other bag! It contained two packages of dark chocolate coated goodies. Knowing that chocolate can kill a dog, we would have had to make a rush trip to the vet! He could have been incredibly sick . . . or even worse! ~ ~~~ Griffon-tastic - a lesson learned

Vacuum habits: My griff is often like a miniature vacuum cleaner! The activity is a common problem with griffs! He will suck anything small from the floor into his mouth.

When we walk to the elevator, all of a sudden . . . whoosh! He'll have sucked something up from the floor. Luckily, most of the time he will spit it out immediately when commanded.

What will he eat? He eats little bits of carpet, pieces of mud from shoes, bits of wood shavings, sock fluff, etc. We try to always be aware of what is on the floor in front of him when we are walking him.

From what I hear from other griffon owners, I'm very lucky he hasn't eaten larger, or more serious items. I'm also lucky because I haven't had to have his stomach x-rayed. ~ Griffon-tastic

caught in the act !

slurrrrrp: This summer one little griff whipped up to an open can of latex paint and took a slurp. Luckily it was latex paint and the tale only gave the vet a good laugh.

Scary: One little Brussels Griffon went through days of vomiting, numerous vet visits, IVs, and inability to eat. Why? The little fellow ate an empty foil candy wrapper. That one tiny candy wrapper could have ended his life.

yum! From cotton swabs to clothing, tissues, garbage, wool, carpet bits, and dental floss. Anything can be enjoyed by these little pooches. Be wary!
