                        CONNECTIONS

George Taylor was born c1797 and he came to Australia 10th Jan 1818.  He was tried at Leicester Assizes on the 26th March 1817 and was sentenced to transportation for life.  He arrived in Sydney on board the convict ship "Ocean".  He was a native of Sheffield and his occupation was tinman.  He was aged 21years old in 1817 and he was 5'3" tall with light brown hair and hazel eyes.
He sought permission to marry Ann Bailey (nee Smith) yet no marriage is recorded in the NSW marriage indexes which may be because the records have not survived.  (Note: possible marriage 1822)yet to be confirmed.
On the 28th August 1832, Ann Bailey petitioned Governor Richard Bourke ...and the response was....
"The woman must be aware how dissolute a Person Taylor is, and as she desires to marry him I do not see any reason to object, informing her however that he will not be allowed a Ticket of Exemption ??? until he shows that he has become deserving of it by regular conduct as ??? his present ???.
Included with the Petition was a comprehensive list of George's frequent disappearances and punishments for the period July 1823 to May 1832.  His punishments  included
numerous lashings, days in solitary and days in irons, chain gang road party, and days of just bread and water. He was punished regularly for being absent from barracks,  for suspicion of robbing Government, for being drunk on the streets, for being absent from the Church muster,  the lumber gang or other employment. He was also punished for absconding and making use of very improper language.  George was finally granted a ticket of leave on 19th August 1846 and was allowed to remain in the District of Bathurst.  He was granted a Conditional Pardon in June 1852. He may have married Ann SMITH in 1822 and they had 5 children prior to Ann Bailey's petiton to the Governor in 1832.
Two of their children were Sarah Taylor and Eliza Taylor.
