Margaret Griffith (nee Fleming) daughter of Mary Fleming and grand-daughter of Jane Somerville married Alexander Griffith
in Australia. The officiating minister was a James Sommerville so perhaps this clergyman was related to her grandmother Jane? There is still much to be completed on these lines.
The general history of the Somerville family begins in Scandinavia and then they migrate to Normandy about 900 to Scotland about 1066 and then to Ireland in 1610.
Sir Gaulter (Walter) de Semerville supposedly arrived with or soon after William the Conqueror in 1066. He may have been one of his knights. It seems that about 300 British families are able to trace their origins back to a place in Normandy and the Somervilles who settled in Stafforshire and lowlands of Scotland all come from Semerville in Normandy. A short distance to the south of the River Seine is the town of CAEN where there was once an estate called Sumer. Near the town of Evreux between Rouen and Paris, there is a small village called Graveron-Semerville. There seems to have been a titled line of Somervilles which died out, nevertheless numerous relatives of de Somerville/Sommerville/Summerville spread throughout England, Scotland, Ireland and then continued the migration to the new colonies of USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
