Ann Bailey (nee Smith) was born c1788 in London. She may have been the daughter of a John Smith and Mary Tompkins? She arrived 19th June 1815 on the convict ship "Northampton" Ann was christened in July 1785 at Saint Mary-Street Marylebone Rd, St Marylebone, London, England and she was sometimes known as Mary. Ann was transported for forgery and came with her two sons. She had previously married a Thomas BAILEY in London some time before 1809 when her son John was born followed by another son called Thomas Jr. in 1813. Her husband Thomas BAILEY may also have been involved in the forgery matter but only received a 2 month sentence. Thomas BAILEY remained in England. Another convict, Joseph SMITH, was transported on board the "NEPTUNE" as part of the 2nd fleet in 1790 and he may also have been a brother to Ann. Joseph SMITH was sentenced at the Old Bailey in London on 2nd April 1788 to 7 years. A William BAILEY was also tried at the Old Bailey on 2nd April 1788 and sentenced to 7 years and arrived on the "NEPTUNE". He may have been a brother to Thomas BAILEY, Ann SMITH's first husband.
Ann BAILEY (nee Smith) died in 1843 and was buried under the name of BAILEY suggesting that she never married George TAYLOR although bearing 5 children to him. The BAILEY family are featured in the history of the Windsor area.
