Advise and ConsentStarring Laughton, Fonda. A great view of how the Senate works This one is from the 60's but it has some good drama as well as the inner working of the Senate. HPS Recommended by Jim , 3/28/2003.

Bowling For ColumbineStarring Documentry. This may only be available on DVD but the message and lessons are so powerful that I highly recommend that it's worth the extra expense to rent a DVD player and see this documentry. As you recall Michel Moore won an Oscar for this documentry last year. When Moore accepted the Oscar he went into a rant about Bush. He was highly criticized for this and, while I agree with his words, I don't agree that the Academy Awards ceremony was the place to deliver it. One of the lessons from the film that will serve everyone is about fear. Moore focuses on how we are manipulated by the government, the media, and business through fear. It becomes very clear that fear is a powerful motivator to go to extreems to find a comfort zone. This film will make the viewer think and be disturbed. Disturbed not by violence (very little violence in the film) but by the message. HPS Recommended by High_Plains_Sailor , 10/8/2003.

Caine Mutiny, TheStarring Bogart, Mcmurray, Ferrair. pt 2 - This a true depiction of the time, according to my father (USN 1937-1974). How lower eschelons viewed, and interacted with thier higher-ups.It is really revealing. It is my father's favorite book. Jim forgot to add that you will need to furnish your own ball bearings. In Harm's WayStarring John Wayne, Kirk Douglas, Patrica Neil. Brandon De Wilde. This movie captures the feel of Navy life with it's authentic sets, sounds, and dialogue. This was on of John Wayne's best films. Kirk Douglas has a very dark side in this film and gives a fine performance. Patricia Neil was never better. The only part of the film that is a stinker is the battle scenes. Surely they could have made the ships look like real ships instead of toy boats in the tub. I hope someday someone replaces those scenes with something believable. On a rating scale of 1-5 Anchors this old salt gives it 4 Anchors but they are incrusted with barnacles. HPS Note: The only movie that Otto Preminger directed that stared John Wayne. The young actor Brando De Wilde played the boy in Shane. Brandon was killed in an auto accident in 1970 while doing summer stock in Denver. He was on the way to the hospital to see his newborn child. Recommended by High_Plains_Sailor , 3/29/2003.

It Was A Wonderful Life (documentary)Starring Homeless Women. I've just finished viewing this poignant documentary narrated by Jodi Foster. It's the stories and lives of women who were either wealthy or middle class who find themselves broke and homeless. Some have children and are not getting child support. Most of them are too proud to ask for public assistance. Can you imagine living in your car, looking for a place to shower, trying to find a day job, and living a day at a time? If you think you have it made and that your future is secure then take another look. This happens to be about homeless women but it could happen to a man just as easily. While viewing this I could identify and recall just how close I'd come once or twice and finding myself in the same situation as these women. This documentary was produced in 1992 but with the recession that we are in at this time it's happening with a new generation of women. The copy I viewed is on DVD and I found it at netflix.com. I'm not sure how available it will be elsewhere. HPS Recommended by High_Plains_Sailor , 7/23/2003.

Lawrence of ArabiaStarring Peter O'toole, Omar Sharif and many others. A good accounting of the Arab-Turkish War in WWI. This made Peter O'toole a star and introduced us to the wonderful Egyptian actor Omar Sharif. Filmaker David Lean gave us some wonderful historical epics and this was one of his best. His other movies included The Bridge on the River Kwai, Doctor Zhivago, and A Passage to India. On the 1-5 Anchor rating scale this old salt gives it 5 Anchors HPS Recommended by High_Plains_Sailor , 3/29/2003.

Mississippi BurningStarring Gene Hackman, Willaim Dafoe. This drama is based on the tensions and violence during the 1960's civil rights movement. Three young civil rights workers are missing and President Johnson orders a massive search headed by the FBI to find them. Gene Hackman and William Dafoe are agents of different backgrounds and personalities that are forced to work together. Great acting by both and William Dafoe is very convincing as an young intense no-nonsense agent. One the 1-5 Anchor rating scale this gets 5 Anchors from this old salt.
