1984
By
George Orwell
. 1984 is my favourite book of all time. David Bowie must've liked it, too; it provided the basis of a new album for him back in 1973-74: Diamond Dogs.He was planning on making a musical, but George Orwell's wife apparently did not like Bowie. He couldn't secure the rights...the music he composed ended up on the album, set in the dystopian Hunger City. Recommended by StardustGrrl , 12/31/1999.
A Clockwork Orange
By
Anthony Burgess (Right?)
.
I've not actually read this one yet but it sounds great. I saw the film and what a cinematic gem! The language is just fascinating; the whole concept is simply mind-boggling. Obviously David drew a lot from this film in the Ziggy period, going so far as to play Beethoven's Ninth at the beginning of his concerts. Read just what the master draws his inspirations from!

Backstage Passes: Life on the Wild Side with David Bowie
By
Angela Bowie
.
It's a quick read but it's all very fascinating. It sheds some light on Angie's relationship with David and their times together (including the exorcism of the pool and some other infamous moments). I read it so fast I don't have a lot to say about it but I do recommend it for a Bowie fan, especially one with a shorter attention span.

Bowie
By
Jerry Hopkins
.
A great biography. Features many excerpts from interviews, and comments from friends and business contacts. There are a few gaps, most of them on the subject of Bowie's drug abuse. (Nothing about heroin, nothing about how and when he kicked his habits, but still plenty of detail, especially about the era 74-76.) The drawback is that the book was published 1975, meaning there's little about the public response to "Tonight", and of course nothing about the past twenty years. And there might be some controversy on subjects like Stevie Ray Vaughan. But for those interested in Bowie's pre-breakthrough era and his 70ies, a real winner.

NAKED LUNCH
By
William Burroughs
. NOT FOR THE INNOCENT CHILD. A very.....well, DODGY book but TRUST ME! I didn't know that it was gonna be that awful! But, aside from the dodginess, the book's non-existent story line (Burroughs suggests that you start from ANY page you like and read it backwards, forewards inside out etc!) deals with drug addicts, AJ's annual party, a very disgusting lunch, and a scientist who owns a giant centipede... do i need to go on ? :) Bill Burroughs was one of Bowie's inspirational writers from whom he borrowed the famous "cut up" technique used in his dystopian DIAMOND DOGS album and indeed, in qa majority of later and earlier work. EART HL ING and OUTSIDE were written with the cut-up method but this time using a special programme David had a friend in San Franciso develop for him instead of having to labouriously CUT UP bit's of paper and manually move them around etc... Anyway, NAKED LUNCH.....dodgy book.FABULOUS! Recommended by Georgi , 1/8/2000.

STARDUST: The David Bowie Story
By
Henry Edwards and Tony Zanetta
.
Henry Edwards and Z tell you everything you ever wanted to know about David. Well, maybe not
everything
but quite a bit. It takes you through the various stages in Bowie's life and career up to a certain point. I learned a lot by reading this book and I think any Bowie fan could. It's always great just for reference too.

THE COMING RACE
By
Edward Bulwer Lytton
. One of the first science fiction books to be written. You can probably guess by the title why i read this. OH, YOU PRETTY THINGS....lalala! I am an impatient person so i was glad to find this book moved quickly. 7 or 8 pages or so into the book, the main character had already introduced himself, descended into the bowles of the eart where his frined had been eaten by this big monster and met a race of flying human beings! Cool! I liked it. Recommended by Georgi , 1/8/2000.
