"Big Brothers Big Sisters of America has matched millions of children in need with caring adult mentors since 1904. Research shows that children withBig Brothers and Big Sisters are less likely to use drugs and alcohol, skip school, and exhibit violent behavior. Our program provides positive mentoring relationships for young people in hundreds of communities in all 50 states. Find out how YOU can make a Big difference." I'm in the process of applying to be a Big Brother. From what I have learned about this program, it can be very rewarding both for the kid and for you.

Childreach - PLAN International USA

Cause:

A child sponsorship program that involves family and community around the world.

Recommended by:

Reasons for Supporting:

The program allows you to sponsor child around the world.  The money suppports the family while also helping to build a community in the child's location.  So many organizations seemed to be hands off as far as the child was concerned, but Childreach allows you to interact.  I have both sent and received letters from my child in Vietnam.  You are also able to send small gifts that I believe truly get to the child.

Compassion International

Reasons for Supporting:

Well, after SAS I knew exactly where and how I wanted to help people overseas....at least in the short run...Southeast Asia. I have planned for years to sponsor a child. However, I have been unhappy with many Christian aid and international evangelism efforts because of their cultural insensitivity. I wanted to find an organization that would care as much for Asian childrens' physical and educational needs as for their spiritual needs. I believe Compassion does this. They put a large emphasis on the power of education for changing conditions (something I wrote about a lot on the Ship, with Professor Harris's prompting :). Unfortunately, the simple fact of the matter is that the life-changing, soul-saving Gospel of Jesus Christ often times becomes empty when there is no tangible love being shown by His followers. It doesn't make it any less true or real, but it does cheapen it and make it less attractive. I believe Compassion is doing a good job fusing the physical and the spiritual and loving and nurturing the WHOLE person, not just a part.

Reasons for Supporting:

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is an international humanitarian aid organisation that provides emergency medical assistance to populations in danger in more than 80 countries. In countries where health structures are insufficient or even non-existant, MSF collaborates with authorities such as the Ministry of Health to provide assistance. MSF works in rehabilitation of hospitals and dispensaries, vaccination programmes and water and sanitation projects. MSF also works in remote health care centres, slum areas and provides training of local personnel. All this is done with the objective of rebuilding health structures to acceptable levels.

Help build and maintain a hospital for the children in Angkor Wat

Reasons for Supporting:

A person we know (of ) wrote an article for the State Paper in Columbia, SC about her visit to Cambodia and she recommended this organization. We have read about it on the Website and are impressed with the efforts being made toward the health and welfare of these impoverished children. This hospital was a gift from the U.S. based Japanese photographer, Kenro Izu, to Seam Reap through the non-profit organization FRIENDS WITHOUT A BORDER which he formed. A myriad of infomation is on the website listed below. We have made a donation through the writer of the article who is participating in the Suzuki Marathon in San Diego this June. However, donations are welcome at the address provided on the site. If you would like a copy of the original info we read, we will be glad to email it to you

Harvest of Hope

Cause:

Harvest of Hope is a division of Partners International, which is a Christian organization. This organization helps first with the physical and then second with the spiritual needs of adults and children who face poverty around the world.

Recommended by:

Autumn H.

Reasons for Supporting:

Harvest of Hope provides needed items to countries around the world. For example, for the physical needs, you can help a woman start her own business by providing the funds for a sewing machine or provide aid for a woman to have her prenatal and follow-up exams. There are villages that need wells for clean water; farm tools are needed for refugees, and bathrooms for schools. For example, for the spiritual needs, you can provide funding for New Testaments, library books for pastors, Bible classes for orphans, Hymnals for Christians, and building materials for churches. There is also a children’s section that a person can give to. For example, milk and soup for the hungry children and Bibles.

Harvest of Hope is in the countries of Vietnam, Cambodia, Bangladesh, China, India, Indonesia, Laos, Nepal, Philippines, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Kenya, Liberia, Mozambique, Senegal, South Africa, Sudan, Morocco etc. As you can see these are SAS and non-SAS countries.

So check out the website but it would be best to request their NEW catalog (because they are updating the website at the moment)!! This is a great way to help out if you are not abroad at the moment and want to share what you learned on Semester At Sea!!

Heifer Project International

Cause:

Heifer Project International gives needed animals to poverty stricken families all over the world, including in the United States. The organization has been around since the 1930's and has received many compliments and humanitarian awards for service. HPI requires that after the family's animal has its first female offspring they must give that offspring to another family in need. HPI teaches the families how to take care of their animals and raise themselves out of poverty so it is an on going cycle. The common saying is you do not give someone just a fish but you teach them how to fish as well. A person can help by purchasing an animal or part of one to give to a needed family. The types of animals are rabbits, ducks, goats, water buffalo, and cows etc, to even a whole ark! The price range is from as low as $10 for various animals ( which is perfect for those poor college students out there that want to help but really do not have the financial ability) to $5,000 for the whole ark which gives 15 animals. This is an outstanding reputable organization! Please check out the website because the above description is just a drop in the ocean. The HPI's website is very detailed and the staff is eager to answer any questions you may have.

I was so excited to come across this organization! I have never heard of a concept such as this to help the poverty stricken nations. HPI goes into countries such as Canada, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Kenya, Cuba, Haiti, Bolivia, Guatemala, Bosnia, Russia, Slovakia, North Korea, Myanmar, Vietnam,  and India. See this organization aids SAS countries from Fall, Spring, and Summer! They help whole villages too. Once HPI gave a northern village of Thailand an elephant! The elephant was saved from being abused and helped the villagers out. It was such a sweet and lovely story. HPI is based on Christian roots. HPI is concerned for the environment and the well being and happiness of the animals!! HPI is ran locally in the countries by the citizens of that country; they work with grass roots and non-profit organizations too. Again, please check out the website.  This is a wonderful way to continue what you learned on SAS . . . if you are not in a developing country at the moment!!!!

Help feed the hungry all over the world

Recommended by:

Charles Tsai

Reasons for Supporting:

The Hunger Site was founded in 1999 to help curb world hunger by using the Internet in a creative way. Visitors to The Hunger Site donate free food to the hungry at no cost once a day simply through the "click of a button." These donations, distributed by the United Nations World Food Programme, are paid for by The Hunger Site's sponsors, including Sprint, ProFlowers, Games2Learn, Miadora and iVillage. Between June 1999 and January 2000, more than 9 million pounds of food, equivalent to nearly 75 million cups, have gone to feed the hungry as a result of the nearly 34 million visitors who have visited The Hunger Site and clicked to help the hungry.
