Harvest of Hope is a division of Partners International, which is a Christian organization. This organization helps first with the physical and then second with the spiritual needs of adults and children who face poverty around the world.
Harvest of Hope provides needed items to countries around the world. For example, for the physical needs, you can help a woman start her own business by providing the funds for a sewing machine or provide aid for a woman to have her prenatal and follow-up exams. There are villages that need wells for clean water; farm tools are needed for refugees, and bathrooms for schools. For example, for the spiritual needs, you can provide funding for New Testaments, library books for pastors, Bible classes for orphans, Hymnals for Christians, and building materials for churches. There is also a children’s section that a person can give to. For example, milk and soup for the hungry children and Bibles.
Harvest of Hope is in the countries of Vietnam, Cambodia, Bangladesh, China, India, Indonesia, Laos, Nepal, Philippines, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Kenya, Liberia, Mozambique, Senegal, South Africa, Sudan, Morocco etc. As you can see these are SAS and non-SAS countries.
So check out the website but it would be best to request their NEW catalog (because they are updating the website at the moment)!! This is a great way to help out if you are not abroad at the moment and want to share what you learned on Semester At Sea!!
Heifer Project International gives needed animals to poverty stricken families all over the world, including in the United States. The organization has been around since the 1930's and has received many compliments and humanitarian awards for service. HPI requires that after the family's animal has its first female offspring they must give that offspring to another family in need. HPI teaches the families how to take care of their animals and raise themselves out of poverty so it is an on going cycle. The common saying is you do not give someone just a fish but you teach them how to fish as well. A person can help by purchasing an animal or part of one to give to a needed family. The types of animals are rabbits, ducks, goats, water buffalo, and cows etc, to even a whole ark! The price range is from as low as $10 for various animals ( which is perfect for those poor college students out there that want to help but really do not have the financial ability) to $5,000 for the whole ark which gives 15 animals. This is an outstanding reputable organization! Please check out the website because the above description is just a drop in the ocean. The HPI's website is very detailed and the staff is eager to answer any questions you may have.
I was so excited to come across this organization! I have never heard of a concept such as this to help the poverty stricken nations. HPI goes into countries such as Canada, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Kenya, Cuba, Haiti, Bolivia, Guatemala, Bosnia, Russia, Slovakia, North Korea, Myanmar, Vietnam, and India. See this organization aids SAS countries from Fall, Spring, and Summer! They help whole villages too. Once HPI gave a northern village of Thailand an elephant! The elephant was saved from being abused and helped the villagers out. It was such a sweet and lovely story. HPI is based on Christian roots. HPI is concerned for the environment and the well being and happiness of the animals!! HPI is ran locally in the countries by the citizens of that country; they work with grass roots and non-profit organizations too. Again, please check out the website. This is a wonderful way to continue what you learned on SAS . . . if you are not in a developing country at the moment!!!!
