CTOCM Listings 1959-1989 & 1959-Present
Note: Listings are Accessible to Members Only.
The original
Listing of CTOCM’s (1959-1989) was given to me by CTOCM Dale L. Clarke in January, 2003. It
was given to him by CTOCM Robert D. “Bob” Hoard. It was apparently being maintained down thru the years.
I don’t know who the original owner was. The copy I received was typewritten, and the “Sequence Nrs” were listed
on the page. Only the first three columns appeared on the original list. The list was not computer generated, and
appeared to have been typed on an IBM Selectric. The original list included Sequence Nr 001, CTOCM
Robert J. Clancy thru Sequence Nr 129, CTOCM Robert W. Hall.
In January, 2005; I appended Sequence Nrs 130 thru 203, using information I obtained, or had on file. The
CTOCM Listing (1959-Present) now contains a listing of CTOCMs, in Date of Rank order, from Sequence Nr 001,
CTOCM Robert J. Clancy; thru Sequence Nr 215, the last CTOCM .... CTOCM/ITCM Michael S. "Mike" Crosthwait.
And that's the way the story will end. On 01 Oct 06, all CTOCM's on active duty converted to the IT rating (ITCM).
On that date, on active duty; there were seven (7) CTOCM's serving as CMDCM's; two CTNCM's, who had converted
from the CTO rating; and fourteen (14) CTOCM's who were all converted to ITCM. One (1) CTOCM was converted to
ITCM in the Selected Reserve (USNR). CTO's who converted to IT on 01 Oct 06 (CTO1's thru CTOCM's ), who transfer
to the Fleet Reserve or the Retired List between 01 Oct 06 and 30 Sep 08, may choose to retire in their new or
previous rating. So, some individuals may revert, at retirement; but there will be no more new CTOCM's.
The most recent addition to the CTOCM List, on 23 Aug 2006; was CTOCM Richard P. "Bud" Beck. Bud is
CTOCM Nr 008 on the CTOCM Listing, He retired in Jun 67 and resides in Colorado Springs, CO.
Super Chiefs were first advanced to Senior and Master Chief in 1958. The first Super Chief advancements were
effective 16 Nov 1958. Two CTC's were advanced directly to CTCM during the first Super Chief cycle: Place, J. K.
and Wilson, H. B. Which branch of CT these individuals were, is not known by the author. Note below that
Clancy, R. J. was advanced to CTCS (CTOCS) during this advancement cycle, and is probably the first CTO
Super Chief.
Sequence Nr 001 is CTOCM Robert J. Clancy, who was advanced to CTCM effective 16 May 1959 (Navy
Times dtd 03 Jun 1959 below). Sequency Nr 002 is CTOCM Elmer D. Malone, advanced to CTCM (CTOCM)
sometime in 1959 (probably 16 Dec 1959). Sequence Nrs 003 and 004, CTOCM John W. Stone and CTOCM
Bernard Strunk were advanced to CTCM (CTOCM) effective 16 Dec 1960 (Navy Times dtd 28 Nov 1960 below).
CTOCM John W. Stone is the ranking CTOCM registered in the CTO SeaDogs DataBase. He retired from the
Navy in October, 1965. He is still alive and kicking, and resides in Fredericksburg, VA.
The clippings from Navy Times for the 1958, 1959 and 1960 advancements to Super Chief (showing all
rates) may be found in the GoatLocker.org article "
Birth of the "Super Chiefs" (E8 & E9)".
I researched each CTOCM listed, on
www.switchboard.com, www.USSearch.com, www.goatlocker.org,
CTTCS Joe Glockner’s NSG History WebSite, and the NCVA NID (NCVA Internet Directory). I found
several CTOCM’s who had not previously appeared in the CTO SeaDogs DataBase. For some, I found
locational (residence) data, but no E-Mail address.
Do you have additional information on any of the CTOCM’s listed in the attachment?
If so, please forward the information via E-Mail to the WebSite Manager. Thanks in advance.
