BWE Wine of the Month
The Bordeaux Wine Enthusiasts "Wine of the Month" program was established by one of our members as an opportunity for all members to taste the same wine on a monthly basis and then post and compare tasting notes at the end of the month. The following are a set of "rules" for the program. As with everything else on this site, these rules are certainly not etched in stone and everyone is always welcome to suggest changes or improvements.
1. Ben, also known as "Whuzzup_", came up with the idea and will manage the program on a monthly basis.
2. A schedule for selection of the monthly wine to be tasted has been established through the end of 2003, as follows:
- May - AKR - Any 97-00 Rouget [Pomerol]
- June - jmw - 2000 Bellefont Belcier [St Emillion]
- July - michael - 2000 Rauzan Gassies [Margaux]
- August - jerry_w_a - Haut Bages Liberal 97 - 00
- September - Estournel - Any 97 - 00 Les Carmes Haut Brion with possible VLT of the 98
- October - Bordeaux-Harry - 2000 Giscours
- November - Brodway - 2000 Haut Bailley or 2000 Lagrange
- December - Dennis - 94 La Conseillante
3. The wine of the month will be selected by the designated member to allow enough lead time for members to drink the wine by the end of the month.
4. The wine of the month must be reasonably available, and should be priced under $40.00. The only exception to this will be in the month of December each year, when the designated member can choose a wine with a price capped at $100.00.
5. The designated member selecting the wine of the month may choose one additional wine that may be more expensive or less expensive, but which other members may try as "extra credit" and can post tasting notes on.
6. The wine of the month may be consumed any time during the month designated. However, tasting notes may not be posted until after 3:00 p.m. eastern time on the last Sunday of each month. Ben will create discussion message threads for the wine of the month and extra credit wine. It is very important that no one review what other members are posting for notes. It is very difficult to resist the temptation, but you are only cheating yourself by looking at other notes. The idea behind this program is to see how similar or different each other's observations are about each of the wines, without the potential for being biased by the opinions of other members. Remember, there are no "right" or "wrong" answers when it comes to the subjective exercise of tasting wine.
7. In January of each year, we will discuss and eventually vote on our "BWE Wine of the Year," selected as our favorite wine from the monthly selections of the previous year.
8. Members are encouraged to be as free and creative in their tasting notes as they like. However, any members using the descriptions "blousey", "begamot", or any other term ever utilized by James Suckling will be forced into the unenviable task of consuming one entire bottle of 1995 Lynch Bages (WS94).
Everyone is invited to participate. We look forward to your notes! Thanks, Jim.
