Many times a post will contain abbreviations for diagnoses, tests or just some general medical abbreviations. This page which can be added to lists some of the abbreviations. As more of them surface I will add them to the list. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ MEDICAL ABBREVIATIONS 1. MEDICAL DIAGNOSES: ADHD = Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder A-FIB = atrial fibrillation AIDS = Acquired immune deficiency syndrome caused by HIV AIHA = Autoimmune hemolytic anemia ALL = Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia ALS = Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Lou Gehrig’s Disease) AML = Acute Myeloblastic Leukemia APLS = Anti-phospholipid Syndrome – results in excessive clotting, DVT, and PE (see below) AS = Aortic stenosis (narrowing of the aortic valve in the heart) CAD = Coronary Artery Disease CF = Cystic Fibrosis CFIDS = Chronic Fatigue Immune Dysfunction syndrome CFS = Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (also called CFIDS) CML = Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia COPD = Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease – usually manifested as emphysema, may be result of asthma, smoking or other causes of chronic lung disease CP = Cerebral Palsy CRPS = Complex Regional Pain Syndrome CRPS I = Complex Regional Pain Syndrome – No nerve injury CRPS II = Complex Regional Pain Syndrome – Nerve injury CTD = Connective Tissue Disease CVA = Cerebral vascular accident (Stroke) CVD = Cardiovascular disease CVID = Combined Variable Immune Deficiency DM = Diabetes Mellitus DVT = Deep vein thrombosis F VIII = Factor VIII (8) deficiency = Classical hemophilia or Hemophilia A F IX = Factor IX (9) deficiency = Hemophilia B or Christmas disease FBSS = Failed Back Surgery Syndrome FMS = Fibromyalgia Syndrome HBV = Hepatitis B virus (usually used in association with the term infection) HCL = Hairy Cell Leukemia HCV = Hepatitis C virus (usually used in association with the term infection) HD = Hodgkin’s Disease ( a type of cancer of the lymph nodes) HHT = Hereditary Hemorrhagic Telangiectasia (a bleeding disorder characterized by abnormal capillaries – the smallest blood vessels in the body) HIV = Human immunodeficiency virus (usually used in association with the term infection) HTD = Hereditary Thrombotic disease (caused by several different genetic defects that result in DVT and PE (see below) IBS = Irritable Bowel Syndrome ITP = Immune thrombocytopenic purpura LA = Lupus anticoagulant syndrome (one of the APLS group of conditions causing DVT and PE) MCS = Multiple Chemical Sensitivities MCTD = Mixed Connective Tissue Disease MDS = Myelodysplastic Syndrome ME = Myalgic Encephalomyelitis or Encephalopathy MI = Myocardial Infarction otherwise known as a heart attack MM = Multiple myeloma (a type of cancer involving the bone marrow) MPS = Myofascial Pain Syndrome MS (in relationship to the heart) = Mitral valve stenosis (narrowing of the mitral valve) MS = Multiple Sclerosis – a neurlogic disorder that is progressive MVP = Mitral Valve Prolapse NHL = Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma (another type of cancer of the lymph nodes) OA = Osteoarthritis PD = Parkinson’s disease PE = pulmonary embolism PMS = Pre-menstrual syndrome PPS = Post Polio Syndrome PSC = Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis RA = Rheumatoid arthritis RSD(S)= Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (Syndrome) SLE = Systemic Lupus Erythematosus TMJ or TMJS = Temporal Mandibular Joint Pain Dysfunction Syndrome TTP = Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura VWD = von Willebrand Disease (a bleeding disorder that can occur in both men and women) 2. LABORATORY, X-RAY EXAMS, PHYSICAL EXAM AND PROCEEDURE ABBREVIATIONS ALT = one of the liver enzymes ANA = Anti-nuclear antigen – a test done for SLE APTT = activated Partial Thromboplastin Time (used to monitor anticoagulation (blood thinner) therapy) AST = one of the liver enzymes BMT = Bone marrow transplant(ation) BP = Blood Pressure BS = Blood Sugar CBC = Complete blood count (includes hemoglobin, red blood cell count, hematocrit, white blood cell count, differential of white blood cells, and platelet count) CT Scan or CAT Scan = Computed Topography Scan CXR = Chest x-ray EEG = Electroencephalogram EKG or ECG = Electrocardiogram ESR = Erythrocyte sedimentation rate – a test that is frequently done to follow activity of RA, SLE, and other autoimmune disorders HLA – Human leukocyte antigen – (tissue typing antigens) Hct or HT – Hematocrit LDH = enzyme found in many tissues LFT = Liver Function Tests MRI = Magnetic Resonance scan PET = Positive electron transmission scan PFT = Pulmonary function tests Plt = Platelet (small cellular particle in the blood involved in clotting) PMN = Polymorphonuclear leukocyte (a type of WBC that fights in infections) PT = Prothrombin Time (used in monitoring anticoagulation (blood thinner) therapy) RBC = red blood cell count RFT = Renal Function Tests SCT = Stem cell transplant(ation) SGOT = Liver enzyme SGPT = Liver enzyme WBC = white blood cell count 3.
