Vajrayana Buddhism is often viewed as the third major 'vehicle' (Yana) of Buddhism, alongside the Theravada and Mahayana. The Vajrayana is an extension of Mahayana Buddhism consisting not of philosophical differences, but rather the adoption of additional techniques (upaya, or 'skilful means').
