Chasing Science by Frederik Pohl is not science fiction, but since a science fiction writer wrote it and since in it Pohl energetically promotes interest in science I have no hesitation in recommending it. Chasing Science is Pohl’s account of his love affair with science as a spectator sport (that’s actually the subtitle of the book), which has taken him to every continent except Antarctica, and allowed to see many marvelous things. Pohl gives some very good advice about how to get tours of various scientific institutions and intermixes this advice with stories of various adventures he’s had, such as living for several months on the side of a volcano, and attending the first Soviet scientific conference at which dissent was freely expressed.
