Dr David L Phares Diary - "May 23rd, 1842 -
As before visiting the sick &c. Today attended the funeral of Mr. Chas. Edwards." D L Phares' Diary - "November 18th, 1841 - Started from home before breakfast. Took breakfast at Mr. Chas. Edward's home where with his family and a few other persons, I set off again and, having provisions with us, dined at Pretty Creek 3 miles from Clinton, E. Feliciana La. Thence, we went to Col. Fluker's in St. Helena Parish. There we saw married a student in medicine of mine, Mr. H. Edwards, and Col. Fluker's daughter, Mrs. Eliza A. F. [T] Worsham. We returned home the next day 19th after having a pleasant time. However, some of the young folks were a little love smitten and reluctantly parted from their lovers."
"November 20th, 1841 - Went to Woodville, whence I brought with me my wife's niece, Miss. N. J. James, from school."
"November 22nd, 1841 - Very heavy thunderstorm & rain last night. The heavens were in a constant blaze. I brought my wife's niece, mentioned the 20th instant, in order that she might accompany us to dine tomorrow with Mr. Chas. Edwards on the event of the arrival of his son & daughter-in-law at home. Also that a mutual attachment of my niece & Chas. Edwards, Jr. might be matured &c. They have pledged their faith to each other, and he has obtained the consent of her grandmother & guardian (her uncle) to the marriage. We all apprehended much objection on the part of her uncle, but [he] made none. He, however, made one request viz; that he (Chas Edwards) should never have her "join a Campbellite Church" alias become a Christian, such was the only condition required by this called & sent Minister of the Methodist Church. Mr. Edwards very properly replied that constraint should never be resorted to in religion, but that these matters should rest with the conscience of every person. Notwithstanding, her uncle makes no objection. Yet it seems to me that he is far from being pleased. His conduct evinces either this, or that he cares little for his niece and ward. He leaves the young couple to make all the arrangements to suit themselves and they at present think of being made one on Wednesday week next, December 1st."
