Ebenezer Baptist

How long I lay I do not know, but after a while came the rembrance of the goodness my God had shown me in the former dark hours I had passed through; how he had been near, my Heavenly Father, and how I had leaned on and trusted Him; with that remembrance came the resolve.

Cornelia Peake McDonald, taken from; Walter Sullivan's; The War the Women Lived, Female Voices from the Confederate South

The first mention of the Duck family in church records can be found in Ebenezer Baptist church notes. Here is an abbreviated version with some of the Duck family in these notes.

"December 17, 1850 The door was opened for the reception of members. Margaret M. Forrest,

Jane E. Forrest, Eliza Ann McKoy, Mary A. Ewell, and James Duck were received by experience".

"December 17, 1853; Mary Duck was received on her experience".

March 19, 1854; "James Duck & R. Johns, were appointed a committee to Bro. E.A. Haygood & report at our next conference".

"May 20, 1854; Bro. J. Duck was excused from the committee and Bro. Wm. L. Johns put in his place."

"June 14, 1856; Bro. James Duck upon his own representation of a difficulty between himself and Mr. Keen was excused from cencure by the Church".

"March 14, 1868 Bro. W.L. Johns preferred charge of adultery against sister Lovy Duck. On Motion the hand of the church fellowship was withdrawn from Sister Duck".

"September 13, 1870; Received for Baptism James Duck".

"July 1874; Charges preferred against D. Brame, Jas. Duck, and B. Canton for drinking

whiskey dancing. A charge was preferred against Bro. Mat Neyland for swearing. A charge preferred against Sister M. Morgan for circulating slanderous reports".

"August 1, 1874; Bro. Jas. Duck reported that he acknowledged the charge and asked to excluded. The Committee in case of Sister Morgan reported that she acknowledged the charge and expressed sorrow. It was moved that the charge be dismissed. During the consideration of which motion Sister Morgan made offensive remarks against the Church and Bro. G.W. Perkins in particular. Then Sister Morgan was put on trial for the offensive language. The trial was postponed until next meeting."

"December 2, 1878; A charge was brought against Brother Lewis Neyland and James Duck and Sister Dora Duck and Flora Causey for dancing. On motion the Church instructed the Clerk to

notify the above named members to appear at our next conference and answer charge against them".

"February 9, 1879; On motion the church proceeded to take up the case of Bro. Lewis Neyland

for dancing. The case of Bro. James Duck was next taken up to the charge of dancing as notified,

on motion the hand of fellowship was withdrawn from him. On motion the hand of fellowship

was withdrawn from Sister Dora Duck and Flora Causey for dancing."

"October 26, 1879; Bro. Lewis Neyland restored".

"December 1880; On motion the Clerk was instructed to notify Brother Mat Duck and Fielding Morgan to attend next conference to answer to a charge of intoxication".

"January 9, 1881; on motion the case of Brother Duck and Morgan was continued until next meeting, and committee appointed to labor with them".

"February 14, 1881; The committee on case of Brothers Duck and Morgan was continued".

"March 13, 1881; The committee appointed to visit Bros. Duck and Morgan were continued".

"April 10, 1881; On motion the Committee appointed to visit Bro's Duck and Morgan was continued".

"May 8, 1881; The Committee appointed to visit Bros. Duck and Morgan, reported that Bro.

Morgan requested to be excluded from the Church, and said Committee further reported that they

had visited Bro. Duck's home several times and failed to see him. The report was received and

the hand of fellowship was withdrawn from Bro. F. Morgan for the sin of drunkenness. On motion the clerk was instructed to notify Bro. Duck to appear at our next conference to answer

to the charge of drunkenness against him."

"June 12, 1881; The clerk reported that he had sent notice to Bro. Mat Duck to appear at conference. Bro. Duck not being present, was excluded for sin of intoxication".

March 12, 1882; The Clerk reported that Bro. Lewis Neyland had sent a statement through him, that he and his wife had been dancing for the purpose of being excluded from the Church; that there existed some hard feelings between him and some members, which caused him to pursue this course. On motion the Brothers request was granted by excluding him and his wife from the fellowship of the Church. Bro. Albert Caston was reported for dancing, and Bro. H.S. Duck and wife for having dancing in their house. On motion the Clerk was instructed to appear at our next conference to answer to above charges".

"September 4, 1892; Sister Lovie Duck was also restored to fellowship. On motion letter of dismission were granted Bro. Parker Duff and Sister Lovie Duck".

During this time period the churches became extremely involved in monitoring their member's lives. Many of this community show up in the Ebenezer notes on similar charges.
