William P. Carter was the father, born 1799 in South Carolina.  Harriet Carter was born in 1805.  Calvin Carter was born in Pike County in 1832.  Francis M. Carter was either born in 1836, or 1839 in Louisiana, another son was supposed to be in that era "dumb" - his name was Augustus Carter, born in 1842 in Louisiana.  The Carter family was well established in Amite County by 1850.
                   Note:  Francis M. Carter and Martha A Newman were married January 29th, 1858. ,  Martha A. Newman had a twin sister and they were both sisters of John Tisdale Newman of Gillsburg. The children of Francis M. Carter & Martha A Newman:
 
               Harriet E. Carter, their daughter,  was born March 6, 1859.  
 
               William M. Carter (Monroe), born Sept. 7, 1860, died September 1923.
 
               John J. Carter was born December 10, 1862 died December 2, 1886.
 
               Cordelio M. Carter - born Oct. 25, 1866 died Nov. 8, 1866.
 
               Emma L. Carter (my greatgrandmother) - born September 25, 1867
              died  July  12, 1925 - she was married to W.C. Erwin . They owned the old 
              McKnight  Home.
 
              Fransis W. Carter - born March 30, 1870 died Sept. 12, 1890.
 
              Martha A. (Mattie Honea) Carter - born August 29, 1872 died July 9, 1899.
 
              Mary M. Carter - born June 4, 1876 died Jan. 2, 2003.
 
              Charles G. Carter - born June 24, 1878 died Aug. 23, 1880.
 
              Robert C. Carter - born October 30, 1881 died ?
 
              James W. Carter - born June 23, 1885 died ?
                    
            * Daughter born to F. M. and Martha A Newman Carter - never named, was born April 19, 1865, died April 21, 1865.
 
Very Interesting and a fairly prosperous family.  Buried in the Newman - Phillips Cemetery though there are just as many Carters in there.
