The Barron Family: Wikinson - Amite - Pike Counties
Brief discussion before arrival to Wilkinson County 1809.
The Barron Family was from the Rock Hill, South Carolina area. Passports were issued to Samuel and Thomas Barron to travel through the Creek Nations. Samuel Barron was the father of Thomas, and Lashoma a Catawba Indian was the mother of Samuel. Indian Land Presbyterian Church of Rock Hill South Carolina was built on land purchased from her tribe.
The name Lashoma comes from the Siouan - Iriquoi, which is the origination (lineage) of the Catawba Tribe (nation). Catawba means "The River People".
William Thomas Barron (Thomas Barron - passport was issued to), and Samuel settled on a piece of property in Wilkinson County, not far from the Buffalo River. William Thomas Barron married Naomi Clark (born 1794) on February 1, 1809 in Burke County, Georgia.
William Thomas Barron was in the War of 1812, Capt. D.T.W. Cook's Mississippi Militia - Wilkinson County, was discharged in New Orleans, March 31, 1815.
William Thomas Barron died when lightning struck him in Holmesville, Mississippi on August 26, 1836. Naomi made many applications for more land for his service in the War of 1812, she received 40 acres issued on the 6th day of April 1852 under the Bounty Land Act of 1850 - she applied and received more on March 3, 1855. Naomi Clark Barron received a widow's pension for William Thomas Barron's service in the War of 1812. It was through the Vicksburg (Vicksburgh) Agency - the rate per month was $8.00 commencing February 4, 1871. Pension through the Federal Government .
Naomi is listed in the 1840 Census of Pike County, Mississippi as Naoma Barron, wife of William Barron.
She is listed as the head of the family in this census. She was listed as owning three slaves, and their ages are:
1 under 10 years of age
1 under 24 years of age but over 10 (male)
1 under 24 years of age but over 10 (female)

Marriages of the Children of Thomas and Naomi Barron:
1. Henry Barron married Malinda (Millie) Felder, the daughter of Preacher Felder from Amite County. Malinda was born June 7, 1816 and died September 2, 1896.
2. Elizabeth (Betty) Barron married Elisha Estess. Elisha was born November 28, 1816 and died March 26, 1883.
3. John Barron married Betty Elizabeth Leggett. Betty was born in 1826 and died August 26, 1881.
4. Nancy Barron married Jim (James) Johnston in 1851. Jim was born June 18, 1812 and died August 23, 1881. Nancy was his second wife.

2. Victory Butler - born May 20, 1838 died September 21, 1888
3. Amanda "Dida" Corkren (sp) - born November 14, 1871 died February 15, 1956. Married October 9, 1890 - NOTE: she was only 19, he was 70. she had 4 children by him.
6. Lucinda Barron married Ansel H. Prewitt. Ansel was born about 1812, died around 1871 -- he was the Reconstruction sheriff of Pike County, Mississippi and was killed escorting prisoners on a train around Brookhaven, Mississippi. Ansel Prewitt was a son of Elisha Prewitt and Ann Huckabee, pioneers from Georgia.
His first wife was Julia Ann Raborn and they were the parents of the following children: Sarah Ann who married Wesley Powell, and then Howell Dickey; William Harrison Prewitt married Polly Ann Vaughn; James Smiley Prewitt married Elizabeth Vaugn; Martha Ann Prewitt married married Cornelius T. Zachary.
Ansel Prewitt married for his second wife, Miss Lucinda Barron, they had two children, an adopted daughter by the name of Ann Elizabeth who married Erasmus Nash and a natural daughter named Naomi Eviline, born about 1852, Naomi married David Vaughn.
7. Naomi Barron married Ira Jeremiah Cockerham, Ira was born about 1816.

10. Arthur (Arch) Barron married Elizabeth Johnston, Jim (James) Johnston's daughter by his first wife. Remember Nancy Barron was Jim Johnson's second wife.
* William Thomas Barron was the son of William Thomas Barron and Naomi Clark, was born in Pike County, near Holmesville. William Thomas Barron married Missouri Ann Huckabee of Pike County on August 7, 1849, they lived near Magnolia until 1864. They moved to Amite County soon after the War Between the States. On July 4, 1879 Missouri Ann died and was buried above the family home, this was the start of the Old Barron Cemetery (Amite County).
The old Barron home was constructed out of logs and the bricks fired on the grounds. The magnolia tree still stands on the site of the old home.
William T. Barron and Missouri Ann Barron had six sons and they are:
1. William Henry Barron - (my great grandfather) - born September 20, 1850 died January 24, 1917. buried Barron Cemetery, Amite County.
2. James S. Barron - born March 12, 1853 died March 27, 1944.
3. John Thomas Barron - born January 18, 1855 and died at the age of 80.
4. Richard D. Barron - (known as Uncle D), Dervitt was the middle name ?, born about 1856 and died at 83.
5. Wiley Washington Barron - born Septemberr 20, 1858 died December 9, 1934.
6. Charles Walter Barron - born November 3, 1860, died September 18, 1948.
Marriages of the Children of William T. and Missouri Ann Barron:
William Henry Barron married Adelia (Delia) Whittington (Noah Whittington's daughter), in September 1872. Delia was born September 15, 1840 and died May 15, 1877. Delia is buried in the Whittington Cemetery near her old home, stone is broken in half.
William Henry Barron after the death of Delia, married Annie Deer on June 6, 1878, she was born June 19, 1860.
NOTES - Annie Dear (Deer) - The parents of Annie Dear were: Lucretia Marsalis Dear (April 18, 1831 - January 19, 1874), William Dear (April 4, 1822 - July 17, 1865) she would have been 14 when her Mother died, during the 4 years before she married, she lived with Nancy Barron Johnston, William Henry Barron's Aunt.
More Notes: THE PARENTS OF LUCRETIA MARSALIS DEAR were: Elizabeth Ann Flowers, born in the Edgefield District of South Carolina August 8, 1809, she was two years old when brought to Amite County - Pumpkin Patch Creek, the Old Flowers Place. She married Ephraim Marsalis, the son of Polly Gordon and Peter Marsalis. Ephraim Marsalis was born October 21, 1807 and died December 19, 1883
The parents of Elizabeth Flowers were:
Henry Flowers and Nancy Adams Flowers. Henry Flowers was born February 2, 1787, died October 15, 1852 - will recorded Amite County. He was the son of Thomas Flowers (North Carolina Militia - American Revolution), born in England April 16, 1740 and died on October 12, 1794 as the result of a runaway horse accident, Wilmington, North Carolina. Will recorded 1794.
