The Starforce Has Lost a Member
"Somewhere, he in now aboard the Space Battleship Yamato on another adventure.
Rest in peace." ~ August Ragone
Forwarded from Jim Kaposztas, who received it from his friend Joe Gunder.
As a result of the attack on the Pentagon, a Star Blazers fan is among the
unaccounted for, and is most likely dead. His name was Michael Noeth, and he
was 30 years old. He joined the Navy because it had ships (like Star Blazers),
but he also loved to paint.
Most people join the Navy to see the world, but he wanted to learn to be a
professional illustrator/draftsman, an official rate in the Navy. He was just
a seaman, a lowly rate in the Navy, but he transferred to All Hands magazine
where he was able to perfect his painting skills. He completed various works
for the magazine, including the cover for April 1998. He moved on, and after
completing tours aboard USS Ramage and USS Wasp, he was commissioned by the
Chief of Naval Operations to do official naval paintings for display in the
Pentagon and Capitol Hill. He also sold his art at shows in New York City.
But he never forgot he was a Star Blazers fan. He would always stop in the
halls of the Pentagon and talk about his 1/500 scale Yamato model that he
picked up during a port visit to Hong Kong. He had all the movies and knew all
the facts, right down to General Lysis and who his right hand man was
(Volgar).
His posting at the Pentagon was at the Navy´s Command Center, which took a
direct hit despite its location behind three corridors of reinforced concrete.
He deserves a Star Blazers-style salute.
Just wanted to keep you in-the-know.
