Mailer News

12/16/05 The busiest mailing day of the year is approaching. It’s anticipated that more than 900 million pieces of mail will be processed this coming Monday.

12/16/05 With Congress preparing to adjourn for the rest of the year, we express again our disappointment over the failure to complete postal fiscal reform legislation in time to prevent the January 8 postal rate increases. Because no reforms were enacted, the USPS must increase rates 5.4% to generate $3.1 billion in revenue. That sum would not have been necessary if the escrow fund were resolved and the unfair military service retiree obligations were returned to the Treasury. It's a $3.1 billion stamp tax that will be charged to customers of the USPS. (We note with some interest the announcement yesterday that the Bush administration plans to spend $3.1 billion on repairs and strengthening of New Orleans levee system. Why does it feel like mailers have been tasked to Give a Dam?)

12/15/05 After attending the last meeting of the USPS Board of Governors, Dan Davidson of the Federal Times writes, "Talk of a “death spiral” at the U.S. Postal Service has been dropped, at least temporarily, in favor of refrains from “Happy Days are Here Again.”"

12/15/05 House and Senate Republican leaders were still struggling Wednesday to agree on a deficit reduction package approaching $45 billion, as House Majority Whip Roy Blunt (R-MO), who is acting majority leader, told the Republican Conference the bill might not come up before Congress adjourns for the holidays. Meanwhile, Senate leaders are seeking to move a compromise version of tax cut legislation for businesses in the hurricane-damaged Gulf Zone by unanimous consent, in hopes that the House can pass the measure before Congress adjourns. Sources said the Senate might pass the measure as early as today.

12/14/05 The Postal Service has added 10 more sites to be subject to consolidation, or subject of AMP (Area Mail Processing) studies. The sites being considered are:

    • Aberdeen (SD) Customer Service Mail Processing Center (CSMPC) into Dakota Central (Huron SD) P&DC
    • Carroll (IA) CSMPC into Des Moines (IA) P&DC
    • Glenwood Springs (CO) CSMPC into Grand Junction (CO) CSMPC
    • Helena (MT) CSMPC into Great Falls (MT) CSMPC
    • Hutchinson (KS) CSMPC into Wichita (KS) P&DC
    • LaCrosse (WI) CSMPC into Rochester (MN) P&DF
    • Sheridan (WY) CSMPC into Billings (MT) P&DC
    • Twin Falls (ID) CSMPC into Boise (ID) P&DC
